  • College Graduation Sighting

I don’t know what to call this but it is probably closest to a sighting.

Today we went to my sister’s college graduation in The Big City and had to park in a parking garage. We paid our $10 and were given a white parking stub to place in the front window. Well, we forgot our tickets so my mom and I went back home for them, leaving the rest of the family at the stadium. When we got back, we showed the girl at the booth our parking stub and she informed us it was the wrong one—that it didn’t belong to them. We could, however, park with them for $10. My mom tried arguing with them but we were running late so we paid them another $10 and were given a pink parking stub.

After the ceremony, we were able to get hold of a manager who first tried to convince us that we really had parked in another garage (we hadn’t, the route we took actually dumped us right into this parking garage and there weren’t any others around), lying about the person who was on duty both times (it was the same girl but she claimed she wasn’t there an hour before when we first went in), trying to say the ticket we had must have already been in our possession from some other trip to town, and basically implying we were pulling a scam but that they had no choice but to refund our money.

Oh, and the white parking stub? Came from a garage across town. Not across the street, across town. We don't even go into The Big City unless we absolutely have to, and don't usually use the parking garages--most places we go to have street parking or we take public transportation and avoid the parking problem altogether.

So, my parents think the girl is scamming her employer, but I can’t think of how it would work. Why give us a fake stub? The only thing I can think of is that they have to keep track of the stubs and the money taken in has to match the stubs taken out. So, for instance, if she had 10 stubs and sold 7 stubs she should have $70 and 3 stubs left over. If she gave out a fake stub and pocketed the money then she would still have the correct amount of stubs and money at the end of the day.

So, to any of you work in a parking garage or similar job is this scenario possible?

Yes, I can see exactly how that scam would work. Girl probably knew people coming into town for graduation wouldn't know better, but probably didn't count on someone leaving and coming back. Wonder if she splits the money with her boss. That's got to be reportable I'm sure.

I don't know how it works in your neck of the woods, but in many Canadian Parking facilities, they are usually regulated by Parking or Transit authorities. I would bring this to thier attention. Failing that, I'm sure law enforcement would be willing to investigate. You can also contact a media outlet to have their consumer reporter do some investigative reporting.

I have no doubt that you uncovered a scammer. Talking to the actual company will probably get you nowhere, since management could very well be in on it. Make sure you keep the stubs. Only surrender them if your lawyer says so as that is your main peice of evidence.

Please contact someone and turn them in. Also, don't forget to keep us updated. This sounds mighty suspicious.

All I know is that the parking structure was owned by the stadium where the graduation was held so probably not much to go on.

Well, we had to give them both tickets before they'd give our money back so we don't have them anymore. Plus, we did get our refund--they just implied we were the ones pulling a scam, not them. Honestly, my opinion right now is that if she's scamming them all on her own, they probably deserve it 'cause we brought it to their attention and they took her side.
