  • I think you're getting your 'ists mixed up (Long)

OK this happened to one of my CWs today and got me so boiling I had to post.

We've recently implemented a 25 rule on all age restricted products. Basically if a customer is buying an age restricted product (alcohol, cigs etc), if you think they look younger than 25 you must ask for a valid ID. No ID = no sale.

So the town where I live and work is a small seaside resort (very small). This past week we've had a lot of students up on holiday. Almost everyone of them has been fine with being asked for ID. Hell a lot of them have it ready to show without being asked. But the locals...

    Today.

    TO: Till Operator
S1: Student 1 (he happened to be black - you can see where this is going can't you)
    S2+3: His friends
    DM: My boss
    WTF: Witch who Totally Freaked

S1 comes to the Tills with 4 cans of beer, his mates behind him have BBQ stuff, meat etc.

TO: Can I see some ID please
    S1: I've not got any.
TO: Sorry I need proof of age before I can serve you.
    S2+3: That's all right we'll get it.
TO: No sorry I can't do that. If you've got no ID I can't let you have the drink, even if your friends pay for it.
WTF: YOU'RE RACIST THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE. NOTHING BUT A RACIST YOU'RE JUST NOT SERVING HIME BECAUSE HE'S BLACK. SERVE HIM, SERVE HIM NOW....

This continues, top of her lungs while another till operator calls my manager to the checkouts.

WTF: I CAN'T BELIEVE YOUR STAFF, USING SOME PATHETIC EXCEUSE NOT TO SERVE THAT POOR BLACK BOY.... by now the three lads have left in embarassment....
DM explains that 25 rule and that company policy means we can't let others by the drink for them.

WTF: I DON'T BELIEVE YOU. YOU MEAN NEXT TIME I COME IN WITH MY 17 YEAR OLD SON AND PUT SOME CANS OF STELLA IN MY BASKET FOR HIM, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO SERVE ME.
DM: Well now that you've admitted supplying minors with alcohol... no.
WTF: WELL IN THAT CASE I'LL SEND HIM OUTSIDE AND BUY THEM ANYWAYS.
DM: Not any more you won't, no. Now I'm asking you to leave the store.

My DM then turns away and heads to the till operator that refused the sale.

WTF: THIS IS NOT OVER WITH. I'M CALLING THE PAPERS AND YOUR HEAD OFFICE. YOU DON'T TREAT PEOPLE LIKE THIS. COME BACK HERE.
(yes she was shouting all of this at the top of her voice).
DM: (turns)I'm sorry I've asked you leave the store(turns away again).

Well we beat her to the punch. We've spoken to our area manager, head office, and the guy who's in charge of all licensing compliance, and enforcement for the company. Result is the till op is receiving a commendation from the company for applying policy correctly, and suffering the withches tirade.

I've decided next time a store doesn't do something I want them to, I'm gonna play the race, income, and age card.

"You won't give me a discount just because I'm a young white male! I have a good income and live comfortably! How can you expect me to pay full price?!"

It'll just be worth seeing the confusion on the employees face.

(of course I'll explain I was just kidding and not really try to get anything out of it)

you know... that's why i like when stores say "forget it" to the "must look 25" and simply have a straight 100% ID check.

and it's posted at every register. not that SCs can read but... it's there

The store I used to work at in high school started doing that shortly after I stopped being a cashier. Dear lord, you should have heard the whining from customers. I had many long arguments with my dad over that one.

Him: This is stupid! I'm over 50 years old, how come they can't tell I'm over 21?!
Me: You don't understand. It's to keep them from selling beer to people who are under 21 but look like they're 25. It just removes any guess work from the process. The store gets fined a lot of money if they sell to someone under 21, far more than any sales they might lose from older people who are annoyed at having to show ID.

                Me: *sigh*

Gotta love challenge 25, so much easier than challenge 21!

The next time someone gets the race card pulled on them, I would love to see them respond, "I wouldn't know. I'm color blind."

                    A question for the cashiers...
If a 30 year old, with ID, had their 5 year old child with them, would you refuse the sale? If you didn't refuse them, and the "I don't have an ID, he does" was next in line, I could see a major case of SC on the way.

                    Just curious...

I don't know about anywhere else, but here in MA:

A person over 21 years of age may not buy alcohol for a person under 21 years of age, unless their relationship is that of parent and child or husband and wife, and even in those situations liquor must be bought at a package liquor store, not a restaurant or tavern. Violation of this section may result in a fine of $2,000, imprisonment up to 6 months, or both. M.G.L.c.138, #34.

That's a bit of a different kettle of fish. The WTF in the OP said her child was 17. A 5 year old is obviously (Gods, I hope it's true) not drinking. Now, if the kid was, say, 14-15, and WTF was behind, the response would be simple:

"You admitted it was for your child, while creating a large disturbance on the property. Management has said we are not to sell this item to you, not matter the conditions."
                        Ba'al: I'm a god. Gods are all-knowing.

It looks like I need to rephrase my question. However, that is starting to go off topic. I should post my question elsewhere.

Thanks for the info, just the same.

I'm not a racist. I'm an age-ist. I refuse to sell alcohol to people who don't look of legal age.

I can be an age-ist and get away with it. Why? Because the government said so.

Don't like it? Call the government and force them to lower the age limit.

Otherwise, go to h*ll and get the f*ck out of my store!

By the way.. not sure if age-ist is a real word.. but it sounds like it. lol
