  • Dog left in car

Today the weather was a hot and muggy 104. An associate coming back from getting her lunch tells me that there is a car in the parking lot with the windows rolled up and a dog is inside

I go outside with another associate and sure enough the poor dog is sitting on the seat and the windows are rolled up with just a tiny crack in the passenger window.

I call the manager and ask him what I should do. He tells me that I myself am not allowed to call the police because Iam on the clock and not allowed to get involved

Well there is no way I am gonna go about my day with a dog left in a hot car. He tells me that I can get a customer to call or an associate not on the clock. So I call in the breakroom and ask the associate that first spotted the dog to call the police. Her dad is a police officer and she calls him but he does not answer so she calls his dispatch and tells them the situation and a cop is out in 5 minutes.

The cop parks next to the car and is trying to open the window when the idiot owner arrives. I don't know what happened next cause I had to leave the front of the store.

What kind of idiot leaves an animal in a car with the windows rolled during a hot 104 summer day?!

You see this happen year in and year out - Heck - there are at least 20 deaths every year because parents leave their CHILDREN in hot cars!!!

Around here at least, it's legal to break the car window to get the dog out.

also just so you know. No one for any reason (in the USA) can tell you that you can't call the police. Your manager was wrong about that. It is your guys' problems already because the situation is on company property. So he should have been the one to call. Your manager is a tool. they might or might not be an asshat, but at the very least they are a tool.

Manager: Help! I'm having a heart attack!!
You: Sorry, I can't. I'm on the clock.
To err is human, to blame someone else shows good management skills.

I never had understood why any company won't let an employee on the clock to report a crime.... especially since depending on the area, not reporting the crime is a crime!

Man, I keep hearing more and more stories about all these moronic owners leaving their dogs in their hot ass cars. Seems like people with common sense are becoming endangered species.

It's summertime and it's getting hot, so we'll be hearing more of these stories through until the end of August, at least.

I'll check to see if any doors are unlocked, and I'll call the cops. I want them involved, even if a door is unlocked. If I'm lucky, they'll tell me to break a window, or they'll come and do it themselves.

Thank you for doing something. Unfortunately, I can tell you the type of moron that does that. Their name is Legion.

Your manager, by the way, is a fing py who probably should have been drowned at birth. He's one of the Legion morons I mentioned.

if you mean the anon, they would be breaking the windows along with anyone else. they have only gotten dumb in the last 2 or 3 years when it became popular, but they used to be all about screwing over jerks.

You know, hubby and I take our dog with us pretty much everywhere we go. She goes to work with him and everything. (Except for these last couple weeks when it's been over 100 degrees, she's had to stay home - and she was not happy about it at all.)

If we have to go to the store and she's with us, one of us stays in the car with her. Or, if we both have to go in for some reason, we leave the car locked and running while we're inside, and we hurry as much as possible.

On a related note, I once called the police because I saw an infant left in a car seat, covered up with a blanket. All I could see was the legs sticking out. Turned out to be a doll, I was so embarrassed and apologized to the police officers, but they told me they would much rather me call and be wrong than to ignore it.

I gotta agree with them there...

I left Pablo in the car exactly once. I went to Store1 to have lunch with my friend, and we ended up going to a place across the street that has outdoor seating (it's a place where you order at the counter, pay, get your food, and then go sit down with it. Not quite fast food but almost) so I wasn't worried about it (we were originally planning to order food and eat at the store, so I wasn't expecting to be going to a restaurant in the first place, and I brought him with me because she wanted to see him). The weather was cool, in the 60s (F), and cloudy, and it started drizzling so we couldn't eat outside; we left Pablo in the passenger seat, and I opened the back windows a bit so he'd get fresh air without getting wet, and we sat at a table where I could see the car, which was parked right outside. He just slept, anyway, but if it were a warm day or sunny, I would have gotten the food to go and eaten in the car, or brought it back to the store.

When leaving a dog in a car, the following things are *required*:

                          - A bowl of water

                          - Ventilation

                          - Car parked in the shade

Anything other than that is just asking for trouble.

That's because the ones without common sense breed more and faster.
