  • Was I sucky?

My wife and I went down to a resort on the beach this last week for 3 days. I had checked in at the office, got my keys, parking pass, etc. The parking pass is important as it has your room number on it and must be displayed on your cars dash for your stay or you get towed. There is a severe lack of parking, anyway I digress. When I got to my spot, I found that another car was in it already. I just took a 2 hour drive to get there, I just want to get my stuff into my room and get to the beach already so I am NOT about to go around to 10 different rooms and go knocking on doors to see who the douchenozzle is that is parked in my spot. So I go to get some general info like make/model of vehicle, tag number, etc to take to the office and let them deal with it when a woman comes out of a room and the following ensues.

    SC: "What are you doing?"
Me: "I'm getting some information on this car to take to the office so I can get my parking space."
SC: "I know whose car that is." (Great, I'm thinking at this point, it will be resolved and I can get on with my long weekend.)
Me: "OK, you say you know these people?"
SC: "Yes, I do, I'll get them to move for you. Its too bad they have to move since they are handicapped. It will be hard for them to get around, its bad enough they have to stay on the 2nd floor. I can't believe you are going to make them move because you want to park your car here." (Snarling as she says this, I'm staying on the 2nd floor as well.)
Me: "I'm sorry that they are handicapped but I really do not see what that has to do with anything."
SC: "They are handicapped! ELEVENTY!!! This place sucks, they are not handicapped friendly! We looked online and they would not even give them a ground floor room." (I made reservations earlier that week and I knew my room number and was told it would be upstairs in advance plus they have a map of the place on their website.)
Me: "Again, I am sorry that they are handicapped and I feel for them but honestly I just do not see what that has to do with it. They are in my assigned space and I would prefer not get towed. You know handicapped people are always saying that they just want to be treated like everyone else. That means that the rules apply to them as well as me."
    SC:

She went and got the people, they moved their car and not another word was said about it. Was I sucky in this case?

I don't think you were being sucky. What you said about the rules applying to them as well as you makes sense.

No. If there is any suck here, it's on the resort for not accommodating the handicapped people, assuming they really were handicapped.

I dont think you were sucky. If parking is allocated when you check in, then the offending guests should have had their own parking spot and pass and used them accordingly.

I say "Bravo" for making the statement that rules apply to all. I see too many people who want "equal treatment" becuase they are, disabled, elderly, ethnic etc...... but think it doesnt apply when the shoe is on the other foot.

Hope this incident did not spoil your holiday and you enjoyed the rest of it.

You weren't sucky at all. In fact, I get down on my knees and praise you as the holder of teh WIN for your statement about the rules applying to everyone. I see too many people who think that equal treatment means they should get special treatment, and then when they get the same treatment that everyone else gets try and claim that it's discrimination because they aren't getting the special treatment.

Does the establishment have special spaces for handicapped people? If so, they should have asked for one. If none was available, they had the choice to stay there and use a regular space or to go somewhere else. Their call.

If the place requires that you be parked in your reserved spot or be towed, then didn't you do them a favor by not letting them get towed?

Not at all sucky, in fact you showed more restraint than I would have.

Not at all sucky - your point about special consideration was right on the mark.

If I was feeling benevolent, I might have offered to trade passes with them if such a thing was possible and if the parking space abusers were a little less caustic than their 'friend.'

To be fair it may not have been the disabled peoples fault. It could just have been the lone busybody taking it upon her broad shoulder to be patronising on their behalf...

No suck on your part. It's not your problem. If it was that much of an issue to them, they should send a message with their feet and their dollar and stay elsewhere.

But that isn't what happened. What happend was that that car in your spot belonged to your bitchy SC. She knew it was your spot, knew she was illegally parked, and was checking to make sure her car didn't get towed or ticketed. That why she was so interested in what you were doing.

The story was concocted to get you to shut up and go away and not raise a stink. I'm glad you didn't.

                      No suckiness on your part.

IF those people REALLY were handicapped... WHY would they stay there?

what was their thought process? 'oh. we can't get a ground floor room and this place isn't equipped to deal with handicapped people.... Let's reserve it anyways'

...Moreover, if they were in your spot with a Tag that did not match that spot, you just saved THEM from getting towed...
