I am finally calmed down enough to post this. It happened yesterday, middle of the afternoon. Where I am it is hot. Muggy. Sunny and 90 F***ING DEGREES!!!
A customer flagged me down to tell me of a little dog in a car. I go to check it out and here is this little Pekinese-something-or-other panting his little lungs out in a truck. It's partially under a tree, with 2-windows down an inch. but it's 90 %&**^!!! DEGREES OUT!!! (if it's 70 out, a car can get up to 110 in just 10 minutes; a dog can survive 106 for just 6 minutes or so; least that's what I learned)
So I have the store page the owner. That's all I can do, even though I can see the doors are unlocked. Even though it would not be breaking and entering, it would still be trespassing. I can only talk to the little dog as he tries to get-out of the heat.
FINALLY the fat douchbag owner in his sweaty wifebeater arrives and tells me bullsh*t it's not animal cruelty because he's in the shade and he was only gone 15 minutes. My voice was cracking, but I told him off. I told him that's 15 minutes too long, how hot the car was getting, and if he really cared about the dog he would have left it at home. I also told him that if I was not on-duty I would have had every legal right to get that dog out of the car. He was not happy and groused and grumbled as I left.
Maybe I overreacted. The dog had a bit of hotdog on a plate in the car, showing at least the owner was thinking of him. When I left, I saw the guy take the dog out of the car to wee. This was probably more out of ignorance for how hot a car can get; even with all my windows down the car I was in was at least 100 degrees, so I could only imagine what that little dog was feeling. I did tell the guy that 15 minutes could have turned into a half hour or an hour, then what might have happened to the dog?
I just felt bad for not being able to do anything more, and for losing my temper while in uniform.
