  • Poor little dog

I am finally calmed down enough to post this. It happened yesterday, middle of the afternoon. Where I am it is hot. Muggy. Sunny and 90 F***ING DEGREES!!!

A customer flagged me down to tell me of a little dog in a car. I go to check it out and here is this little Pekinese-something-or-other panting his little lungs out in a truck. It's partially under a tree, with 2-windows down an inch. but it's 90 %&**^!!! DEGREES OUT!!! (if it's 70 out, a car can get up to 110 in just 10 minutes; a dog can survive 106 for just 6 minutes or so; least that's what I learned)

So I have the store page the owner. That's all I can do, even though I can see the doors are unlocked. Even though it would not be breaking and entering, it would still be trespassing. I can only talk to the little dog as he tries to get-out of the heat.

FINALLY the fat douchbag owner in his sweaty wifebeater arrives and tells me bullsh*t it's not animal cruelty because he's in the shade and he was only gone 15 minutes. My voice was cracking, but I told him off. I told him that's 15 minutes too long, how hot the car was getting, and if he really cared about the dog he would have left it at home. I also told him that if I was not on-duty I would have had every legal right to get that dog out of the car. He was not happy and groused and grumbled as I left.

Maybe I overreacted. The dog had a bit of hotdog on a plate in the car, showing at least the owner was thinking of him. When I left, I saw the guy take the dog out of the car to wee. This was probably more out of ignorance for how hot a car can get; even with all my windows down the car I was in was at least 100 degrees, so I could only imagine what that little dog was feeling. I did tell the guy that 15 minutes could have turned into a half hour or an hour, then what might have happened to the dog?

I just felt bad for not being able to do anything more, and for losing my temper while in uniform.

Actually, I think you under reacted.

I am not sure what the law is, but I can't imagine you would get into legal trouble opening a door in such circumstances. The cops should have been called on the guy.

On duty or off does not matter. Being on the clock doesn't make it so you can't call the cops. If your boss tells you it does, he is very, very wrong.

Most states you can get into big trouble for that (opening the car door) PLUS you never know what the dog is like and a dog in distress can act erratic - you don't want to get bitten.

But I do agree 500% that the police should have been called. Some states animal police do have the right to arrest but they all have the right to confiscate the dog if they feel it is in immediate danger - which this one was.

Unfortunately, I was told not to call the police unless the dog is at deaths door. And my company could have been sued, or I could have been sued civily, for 'trespassing' in the vehicle.

The little dog was very sweet. I could see he had his current tags, so I compromised by petting him through the window with the 2-fingers that could reach. He was estatic!

I would very much like to join the SPCA law enforcement division if there is one in my area.

That right there, is bullshit. You can call the cops if you damn well please. Hell, my cookoo neighbor calls the cops every time someone parks funny around here. It's your right to inform the police.

You can call the police, leave detailed info about the issue at hand, and when the dispatcher asks "What's your name?" you tell them, "Oh, don't need it" and hang up.

That's easy enough. And if your boss says "Oh you can't call the cops someone might get mad at us" you say "Fine sure uhuh" and do whatever you want to do. If I see someone beating the living daylights out of another person, I'm sure as hell gonna call the cops...and if my boss had a hissyfit about that I'd tell him/her to go find a sharp stick and use it nicely on themselves.

That kind of "we turn blind eye" stuff pisses me off.

When a person or animal is in danger, it is ALWAYS appropriate to contact the emergency services. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is lacking in empathy.

              3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.

You can always leave the tip anonymously when you call the police and unless it is harassment, I don't think people can sue for having the police called on them.
