  • Airline suck (very long)

We just got back from a trip to Alaska. My brother is leaving for Irak in September so this is our last family vacation for a very long time.

We left at 5:00 am to catch our flight to our cruise ship. When we got to the airport we found out that our flight had been canceled. We were frustrated because where we live the airport shuts down at 10:00 pm every night so they new that it was canceled the night before and didn't call us until after we had left that morning. My mom asked him to check for other flights that we could catch and to see if we could get another flight through the other airline that we had in the building. He told her if she wanted to find that out she would have to go to the other airline and that because the flight was canceled due to fog he had no obligation to help us at all.

We ended up calling the 800 number that they had and they kept telling us that they had no flights avilable to get to the ship in time. We ended up finding one online through another airline five hours away. They told us that they would transfer the tickets to the other airline and to got straight to them. When we got there we found out that they hadn't transfered the tickets so we had to go to their counter to get it fixed. Mine was the only one they transfered so the other airline called them it took half an hour to fix.

When we got on the ship my mom called their office to get my brothers flight changed so he could pick up the truck. They charged her 75 dollars to change the ticket. When she asked why we hadn't been informed the flight had been canceled she was told that because we had used a travel agent they weren't under any obligation to inform or to help us.

My mom called our travel agent and she had never heard of this before and was able to get my brother a cheaper ticket through the other airline so she booked his ticket with them. When she called them to tell them they tried to charge a cancelation fee even though we had flight insurence and refused to wave it untill she proved that we had it. When we went to check in on the way home I had no ticket when we called them they claimed that is was because my parents had changed my ticket. My dad told them they had done nothing but try to check me in and was told that he had hit a button to change it and that it was his fault before activating my ticket.

I've had an easier time flying stand-by on a pass, after being delayed by Hurricane Katrina!

So my mom sent them an email complaining about how she was treated and finnaly heard back from them they are giving her 1,000 worth of ticket vouchers and told her that they would speak to the representatives that she had talked to and would take care of the problem.

I think that the biggest thing that we learned from this is to book a flight for the night before because it is worth the price of the hotel room to not have to go through all of this.
