Actually, it would make sense, Polenicus. Gangs already have members enrolling in the military in order to get a hold of military-grade weapons and equipment. Getting members into college would give them the advantage of learning chemistry etc. Gangs are actually quite devious.

This could be true, but its my understanding that most black gangs are into selling drugs but not necessarily the production of them, and most black gangs aren't as business centric and organized as other groups. Of course this is a pretty general statement and might not be true of all black gangs.

Personally I'm going to second the suggestion that everything he knows about being gangsta he learned from rap lyrics. There should be some sort of program that takes people like that and puts them in an actual ghetto for a few hours so they can realize how not gangsta they really are.

I recommend watching History Channel's 'Gangland.' It really educates you on the inner workings of street-gangs.

As for a theory...since Latin gangs seem to be taking more control of distributing drugs from Latin America, other gangs might be finding it cheaper to manufacture their own instead of having it shipped in. Of course, this is just my own musings.

It was my understanding that Latin Gangs had more South American ties, rather then Mexican ties. I've actually heard about Mexican cartels driving drugs further north into the American south east after border control crackdowns made it difficult for the gangs to cross into Mexico. With how brutal the Mexican cartels are I would imagine they would sell to anybody without predijugice.

As for manufacturing drugs, I am sure meth is done alot, but I don't think going to college is required for that. Going to college might do more to convince you to not make meth, although really nothing is impossible. I suppose it all comes down to the gang's goals. Are they in it for money, protection, or to emulate rappers. Its just that I've never seen much evident of black gangs being particularity focused. They seem to get more bogged down with fighting each other and reputation that the idea of a gang deciding to send one of their own to college and him agreeing to go seems a bit far fetched to me.
