I was in the Health & Beauty department of a large retail store, here in Switzerland. As I moved to pay my items, there were two open tills, both already having a line of 4-5 customers. So I get to the back of one queue and start waiting.
After a few minutes, other customers arrive and now both lines are about 10 customers long.
A cashier comes, opens a third till and waves in our general direction, telling us that we can use her till. As I was in the middle of my line, I expected someone in front of me to change to the new till, but nobody moved. The cashier waves at us a second time and I decide to take the opportunity, as no other customer seemed interested.
The time for me to get to third till, a woman appears from nowhere (that is she was not not in one of the lines) and dashes in front of me to get first to the till. She had about 5 to 6 children wildly running around here.
Although a bit rude, it did not much matter to me, as anyways I would be waiting less that when I was in the other lines.
Much to my surprise, the cashier refused to serve the woman, telling her she had opened the till for customers already waiting and that she should move to the back of one line. The woman started to argue , but the cashier totally ignored her and asked me to come forward and bring my items. I felt a bit awkward, paying while the woman was still arguing and moaning next to me. I thanked the cashier for enforcing fairness between customers.
It was the first time in my life I have witnessed a cashier behaving that way. Kudos to her !
