  • Come join our parade!

This is a story from Hubby's supervisor (HS). As a security supervisor, a large part of his job is driving around from site to site to make sure people show up for work and aren't napping on the job, among other things.

Last Saturday was our big parade day. The route bisects most of downtown and navigating around it can be tricky, and there were traffic cops directing traffic around the area.

HS was out doing his supervisory things, just trying to get through downtown. A traffic cop was directing all the traffic one way. When HS got to him, he was suddenly diverted in the other direction.

HS didn't know why, but who was he to question the almighty traffic cop?

So HS followed the cop's instructions...and soon enough found that he had become part of the parade. By that point it was too late to turn back.

He happened to be in one of of the company vehicles with a light bar, so he flicked on the lights, started smiling and waving at people, and slowly crawled down the parade route, the beat of a marching band behind him the whole way. There was simply no way out. He didn't really have another choice. And since he was on the clock, it wasn't like he was losing money himself.

After the better part of an hour, he reached the end of the parade route and was able to continue on his normal business duties.

How funny! I wonder what could've led the cop to believe HS was part of the parade? At least he had a good attitude about it from what it sounds like.

Well...Back in New Orleans (which is pretty far from the OP, unless I misread), "truck parades" are not uncommon -- maybe the cop figured HS was just late on getting to the parade route?

Years ago, during one of the local celebrations/parades, a semi joined the end of the parade. He was happily chugging along in line, waving to the crowd and blowing his horn, having a great time.

Right behind him, a pair of seniors in a motorhome, glaring at the crowds and giving us all catbutt face.

I was maybe seven years old at the time.

Ah, I miss that parade. We used to have so much fun. Especially during the whole festival week, when the fleet comes in. When I was 21 and living with friends, we used to call up the Dial a Sailor (which is to invite them to dinner) and ask for a sixpack..two blondes, two brunettes, two redheads. They never did deliver....

Bummer - at one time I could provide a sixpack like that off of Rob's sub here in CT

We used to bring guys home on holidays just so they didn't have to spend Thanskgiving or Christmas in barracks.

In my hometown, that's all we have. The last time I can remember seeing an actual float parade I was still just a kid.

Too funny bhs. I'm guessing it was the light bar that 'tipped' the cop off that HS was parade bound. Fire engines and other emergency vehicles are frequent parade items, they have lights, therefor....

Years before we met my wife and her collage roommate had an opportunity to vacation in Switzerland. Both avid bicyclists they were having a grand time biking around the Swiss alps.

She said one day they had biked to the market and were heading home, she had a loaf of French bread and some fruits and veggies in her bike basket, when all of a sudden there were people on the sides of the roads clapping, cheering them on and trying to hand them cups of water.

It wasn't until bicyclists with numbers on their backs started whipping by them that they realized they had inadvertently become part of the Tour de Suisse.
