  • JUST. GO.

Waiting to make a left turn onto the main drag in town this morning. It was around 9:30 am but there wasn't much traffic.

Three cars driving from right to left - in the direction I was turning. No cars coming in the other direction.

It's nice and all that you decided to let me go. Maybe you needed the karma, maybe you're just a nice person. You know what? I don't mind waiting 12 seconds for you and the other 2 cars to go. By sitting there and insisting that I take my turn, you are now making my turn take LONGER.

Even after waving you on, you insisted on sitting there, waiting for me to turn. You are now holding up traffic for your own hubris.

You want to be nice? OBEY THE FUCKING RULES OF TRAFFIC AND JUST DRIVE.

I was so pissed off I actually turn right, because I'll be goddammed if I'm going to contribute to you disrupting traffic. I went up and turned around and came back and got the parking space I wanted.

Had it been rush hour and I was waiting for a line of 20 cars? Yeah, I'd appreciate the gesture. Although if that was the case I'd have just driven around the back street and turned at a traffic light. Oddly enough, I am capable of making these driving decisions without your charity.

I'm always worried about accepting such courtesies from other drivers ... especially if I'm making a left turn. Since AFAIK, if you get into an accident while making a left turn, chances are very good you will be held responsible.

Yeah, I don't mind waiting while the person who actually has the right of way goes first. I'm not driving an emergency vehicle, there's no way I'm in that much of a hurry.

That's exactly why I hate this kind of "charity" as well; if you have right of way, then make full use of it and get past me. By stopping, or worse just slowing down with no indication that you're ceding your right, you're eating into the gap behind you that I could use to make a safe, legal turn.

Having had assholes & idiots that think it's fun to "wave" then start moving at the same time as me, I refuse on principle because I know any judgment would automatically be in their favour.

If they suddenly took off and rammed you, without witnesses or video, you would be held responsible.

The one I see all the time around here, people stopping to allow someone to make a right turn on red.

driving instructor told me to not wave people through as you are telling them it's safe and taking responsibility for that.

The only time when it's OK to wave someone through out of order is when the vehicle which is supposed to yield is fouling the move of the vehicle with the right of way. I've been on both ends of this.

            - Industrial area with narrow streets, making a right turn from left curb to left curb (53 foot trailers take a LOT of room in a turn). Car on the street I want to go into wants to make a left turn. I can't go until he's out of the way.

            - Canadian Tire parking lot (I'm in my car). Mirror image of above, pickup with utility trailer wants to turn right, I want to turn left. I go first so he can turn through the space I was occupying.
