I used to drive on a minesite (on a mountain). We needed four wheel drives as there was some very steep slopes on gravel roads. And it was always wet. And our vehicles were used to ferry people from the airport to the mine on the mountain and so were always full of people and luggage.

In my city the need for four wheel drives is not so much. We have all sealed roads, no steep slopes no need for enormous 4WDs driven by one tiny lady with a small child in the back seat.
However what these monsters do is:-
You might gather I hate them. The really big flash ones have no real function anywhere. They are useless in the city and who is going to take a new shiny $50K 4wd into the country and go mud sliding in it? Or use it to launch your boat into salt water?

However what these monsters do is:-
- Cut off my view when they pull up next to me at a corner or in a carpark.
- Are slow to accelerate away from the lights.
- Behind me at night their lights are like brights in my rear view mirror.
- Cut off my view of cars entering the roadway when they are parked.
- Cost their owners more to run (Using more than their share of fuel).
- The diesel ones stink.
- Are not safer than my sedan (They tip over).
- Threaten my safety (If I hit one).
