  • Intersection of stupidity - long

Alright, let me start this off by explaining that I live on the corner of a very busy intersection. There is a busy road, and a quieter one that intersect. The quieter one has the faster speed limit, though you'd never guess it with the way people drive.

I've lived in this house for 11 years now and in those 11 years have seen that many, if not more accidents occur on the corner. It took 3 years after I moved in for someone to realize that the speed limit should be dropped on the busy road as there was poor visibility for those on the other road with the stop signs. It went from 50 to 35 mph, though you will still have the assholes riding your bumper should you go anything below 45-50 mph. I slow to 35 just to piss them off, especially since the entire road is no passing.

Anyway, today I was sitting at the kitchen table reading and eating my lunch when I heard a bang/boom type sound. At first it sounded like a heavy door slamming in the house but the only door that sounds like that was the one next to me and it was already closed. Second thought is to, as always now where there is a sound like that, get up and look out the window to the intersection. Sure enough there were car bits littered in the street and a car pulled over to the side.

I yelled for my step-dad that there had been another accident and we went outside to watch while calling the police. The attached picture is the placement of the cars and what occurred while we were waiting for the police to arrive.

The people who got in the accident were walking around and yelling back and forth, appearing to know each other and seeing as they looked to be high school age and the buses were starting to come through, I'm going to assume they did know each other.

Two cars pull up to the stop, one being the other. The second car beeps at the first for no apparent reason as it is a stop and thus they are required to stop. I don't blame the first person for getting pissed, however it was not necessary for him to then get out of the car and start yelling at the person in the car behind them. That was just stupid. You don't know what the hell they have in that car. The person who beeped however just sat in their car and I saw the one finger salute held up at the window.

The first guy walked back to his car and now a third car pulls up. In stead of waiting, he pulled into the oncoming lane and drives around the other two cars and starts to pull into the intersection, very nearly causing yet another accident as a car is speeding up from the other side of the busy road.

First off, the guy getting out of his car is a dumb ass. Just keep driving, if the other person is going to be an ass, let them be an ass. Also, pulling into the oncoming lane when you can't see what's happening in the intersection? Bad fucking idea. They're lucky that the car that was coming down the street slowed down when they saw the accident and had enough time to slam on the brakes and lay on the horn before swerving to avoid you.

Second, what the is up with these high school kids driving new cars? Both cars involved will need extensive body work done and they both appeared to be at least 07' if not '08 or '09 cars. No new driver needs a new car. And I'd would like to add that I am 19 years old. I didn't get a new car, I didn't want a new car. Why? Because almost all new drivers will get into minor fender benders if not major accidents. Maybe a new car around 20-21, but certainly not at 17.

And for the accident to happen, I will bet all of my belongings on the fact that one if not both of them were speeding. I'm not saying that all teenagers are horrible drivers, but I drive through that intersection from every which direction and I know that the visibility is down, but if you start turning, any cars coming at the proper speed would have enough time to slow down enough to avoid the hit. Also, there were no brake marks and no sounds of brakes so I'm also guessing that someone wasn't paying attention.

I'm so sick of seeing accidents happen in front of my house because people can't obey the damn speed limit. I will admit that I drive 40 in the 35, but I have been behind some people that are going well above 50. It brings me glee when the police set up the speed trap across the street. I wave as I leave the house.

Wow, that's just ridiculous. Never get out of your car while driving!! That should have been learned early on in Driving 101. Not even, really more like Driving 56
Around here at least, it seems like if you aren't speeding 10-15 miles above the limit, there's always a jack@zz behind you tailgating impatiently. WTF is everyone in such a HUGE hurry for?

I really agree! My mom always said, the older you are, the newer your car. Especially because the insurance on a new car for a high-school driver must be ridiculously high. (My new car is a 2001, so I guess I'm getting old... )

When I got my first car, I was 17 but I was also going to community college. It was a 45 minute drive and thus I needed my own car. I got my mom's '04, that was in '07. Not exactly and old car, but not new either. Plus, when my mom bought a new car, I was responsible for paying the increase in insurance. I'm not actually paying my own insurance, I'm paying the insurance on her new car, which since my mom has a perfect driving record, I don't mind.

In my high school, a lot of the kids were given new cars. I don't really live in a wealthy area either, and I hate to think about what it would have been like to go to one of those schools in the wealthy area. We had at least 3 accidents I recall my senior year involving all students, one of which involved the totaling of one girl's parent's new BMW.

Expensive lesson for the parents: don't let your high school aged kid drive your BMW.

Otherwise, I think your municipality should put a few rows of "attention" dots before the intersection each way on the no-stop street. Those are the non-reflective dots they put across the lane to get drivers to snap out of their road-hypnosis and be aware that there is a potentially dangerous spot up ahead.
