One of the intersections with the double left that I go through, is just before the highway entrance. At least half the cars in the left lane, dive across into the right lane to get on the highway.
There's the exact opposite near my work. The offramp from the freeway has 2 right-turn lanes, and 90% of the people getting off the freeway want to turn left at the intersection 200 feet from the offramp.

When I take that offramp, I'm part of that 90%, and I use the lefthand turn lane. I've had more than one dipshit in the right lane run me out of my lane or miss the turn entirely after reacting to my honking at them. I never trust them to know what the hell their doing, and it's saved me from at least a dozen accidents.

my friend pointed it out to me that you can't for example use the rightmost right turn lane and then drive straight into the leftmost lane on the other road...
I know that the law here is that if you are turning right from a single right turn lane, you must turn into the first lane of traffic, which will be the right lane. A left turner from the opposite directly turning onto the same road should be safe to turn into the left lane at the same time, but I've had people try to hit me while doing that.

The most egregious example of someone turning right and going straight into the left lane happened when I was still in Orange County. I was on a street with a 40mph limit, and I was driving the limit. I was nearly in the intersection when the fucktard turning right onto the street pulls his ass out in front of me and then proceeds to stop to make a left turn 20 feet later! I have to slam on my brakes, and I would have hit him pretty hard if he didn't get an opening in time to whip his crappy little car out from in front of me. He pulled into that parking lot and sped all the way around the other side of the building. I'm hoping he was scared that I'd come after him for that shit.

Somehow I think that if you had a car beside you, you'd at least try not to drive into them
That's a good theory. Douchebag drivers don't subscribe to it, however. I've even had people at 2-lane left turns drift over the dotted lines to try to run into me.

and the worst part is: if there is a three or more car pileup, the LAST person to hit everyone's insurance is responsible for ALL cars...
That's not true here. Often, it's the second person in the chain at fault.

Although my ex somehow managed to be found at fault after someone else rear-ended him. I don't now how unbelievably incompetent at your own defense you have to be to get found at fault for getting rear-ended.

Don't be so sure. Some old fool in a Buick "got confused," and tried to merge into the passenger side of my father's Saturn L-series Marked up both doors, damaged the rear fender, and ripped off the hubcap. At least the Buick got the worst of it though.
