  • Indicate! Somebody's life depends on it!

To the driver of the ambulance behind me last night:

If you'd used your indicator, I would have known you wanted to turn and so I wouldn't have gone into the turning lane. Instead I thought I was getting out of your way by using the turning lane, but no you had to nearly rear end me and flash your high beam lights. You were probably thinking "Why doesn't this idiot get out of the way?" when the real idiot is you for not indicating your turn.

You know, I think I mentioned this before, but it never gets too old to repeat.

Nowdays, they supposedly make cars that won't start if you don't put your seatbelt on.

They should make cars that sense if you're trying to turn...the signal should automatically dink dink until the car corrects itself again. I also think EVERY car should come with sensors for automatic headlights, so that people can't get away with driving around at dusk and early morning/early night with no lights anymore.

With how lazy and dumb people are getting to be, I highly doubt they'd know the car was made that way, and how many of them would actually take it to a shop to get it changed, or find a mechanically inclined friend to do it?

If he had his lights on your not supposed to change lanes at all, at least thats what I thought. Well except to get over to the far side of the road and not block any parking lot enterences or driveways.

I've tried that before, instead of going around you they tailgate and flash their headlights until you move out of the way.

Remind me to never visit you then. Here you move to the side, if you can not move to the side you stop where you are and let them pass. If at a intersection no one goes through and no one moves where they are at even if they think they are being helpful in clearing a way. So the ambulence can go in the opposing trafic side since no one will be there to get whereever they need to get.

Also forgot to mention... there was no other traffic around. The ambulance driver was just being a dick.

Its quite elegant here in the UK, on a 2-lane (each way) road with a central raised divider, if you hear an emergency vehicle coming behind and the traffic is still, if you're in the left lane you move onto the left kerb, and if you're in the right lane you move onto the right kerb. This creates a clear path down the middle of the traffic. Quite cool to watch.

We have shows such as traffic cops and road wars which film from police point of view, and you see some stupid drivers on there, like those who dont realise they ARE aloud to run a red light when there's an emergency vehicle right behind you!

I suggested this to my mom in conversation a few weeks ago; her rebuttal was "what if you're only changing lanes?" (...you realize we just escaped getting hit by some idiot who didn't signal while trying to cut across 3 lanes). In that case, it would only kick in if the steering wheel was turned past a certain point. Maybe for lane changes the blinker would only go on at 3/4 brightness so others could still see you're trying to do something.

Thing is, it's no use to have turn signals that are hooked to the turning of the steering wheel.

We need ADVANCE WARNING that the other driver is going to turn. If the light blinks when he IS turning, well, we can already SEE the vehicle is moving. There are drivers around northern Virginia who do that all the time, like a little extra insult. "I'm cutting you off! And I'm going to flick my turn signal at you too, just to show you that I COULD have signaled and DIDN'T"

As far as emergency vehicles go, here in the US you're supposed to slow down, move over to the right and stop to let them pass. I absolutely despise getting boxed by people who won't move over when an ambulance comes up behind me. But it happens all the time, nonetheless.

I was just going to say that! It absolutely floors me how many people I've seen that will not get out of an emergency vehicles way. They might be going to help someone you know and love. Eejit.

MA now has the "Move Over" law which mandates making way for emergency vehicles. That should make things interesting given the typical total gridlock in town on a weekend...

They do. At least most of the trucks around here have those now.

I thought that was mandatory for newer cars...at least Mom's Passat has that.
