  • Guy who doesn't know directions

All these posts about construction zones made me remember what happened to me several months ago.

There's 2-roads I can use to get to the highway and get to work; a main one and a back one. Back one is longer, but if the main one's backed-up, it ends-up being faster. So the main road looked clear and I headed-out about 11:30PM. Now there's a hill with a sharp turn just before an intersection. I got to the hill and noticed flashing lights, so I slowed and crawled around the hill. Now I could see the fire and police, the cones, and people in vests with glowing wands. The guy with the wands (one in each hand) began waving me-in; as in, he was directing me to come forward (like if he were doing arm curls with each arm) So I came forward. Now I'm a little further around the hill and am confused because the road seems to be totally blocked. Then the guy that was waving me in runs to my car and starts yelling through my window "What do you think you're doing lady!? Can't you see there's an accident?!!" I told him "No, I couldn't until I came around the hill and you started directing me in." He said "Well you can't get by this way! Geeze, keep driving like that and we're going to have another accident!" I told him no, we would not. So I had to back-up a few feet and take a side street to turn around and get back to the back road.

I wanted to ask him why he was waving me to come forward if the road was blocked, instead of directing me to the side street in the first place. I also thought it would have been a good idea for them to have had someone stationed at the top of the hill before the curve as a warning, or at least some road flares. I don't know who the guy worked for; he was an older guy in a shirt & shorts wearing a yellow vest. Someone said he was probably retired fire. Be nice if he had been given a crash course on how to direct traffic, because what if he had waved someone in who was going a lot faster than me!??

I'd bet he's seen guys in movies waving lightwands around, and just randomly mimicked them.

He may have been relieving someone for a break period, and really had no idea how to direct traffic.

Not excusing his behavior or what could have happened, perhaps just an explanation as to why the stupidity on his part occured.
