    It could be the lubrication getting stiff in the cold. If you can take the freewheel apart you could try this, as you can see it lubricates down to -43°C. I use the Super Lube grease and oil in internal gearhubs for exactly the same problem.
    It can be a bit of water in the freewheel, the taking apart, cleaning and oiling will work there too. The problem is that most of the freewheel bodys nowadays aren't made to take apart. Your local bicycle mechanic may be able to help.
