  • Don't like the red light? Use the shoulder!

I was not quite awake driving this morning and was about 6-cars back at a red light. The light had just changed and as we started moving forward some dickwad in a dark Jeep Cherokee ROARED past me on the right-hand shoulder, passing the remaining cars to make his oh-so-precious right hand turn that he COULD NOT WAIT to make!

    Woke me right up!

Actually that might be legal. Here i know with left turns, you can do that in the center turning lane so long as you don't cross another intersection. This means if there's no cross streets and traffic is backed up a half mile from the intersection, you can legally drive down the middle of the road, as insane as that sounds. I'd be curious to know what the laws are regulating right turns and shoulders in your area.

Around here, if there is enough room on the shoulder or to the right of car, you can pass them and turn right, as long as it done safely. Now, speeding up and passing an entire line of cars, not safe, so not not legal.
Just because they serve you, doesn't mean they like you. And just because they smile and act polite doesn't mean they aren't planning to destroy you.

The last time I ever saw such nonsense was a few years ago, I was with a friend at a gas station about to leave, and a car full of guys in a Camry did a sidewind around my car, went up a curb, hopped it, and full out blew it in front of all kinds of traffic just to turn right before everyone else without having to wait.

A huge accident was avoided, but was so close to happening. I do not know what the living fark those idiots were thinking.

          Around here, that's perfectly legal.

The passing on the right part, not the driving way too fast to be safe part.

I've mentioned "lane sharing" in another thread. It basically boils down to the idea that if two vehicles can occupy a lane side by side without crossing into other lanes, it's perfectly legal to do so. This is mostly aimed at motorcycle riders, but applies equally to autos. This would also come into play when a person would use the right-hand shoulder to pass, as well. If it was done in a safe manner, it's perfectly legal.

He was partly in my lane, partly on the shoulder, which is why I was so startled; my car was smaller and I didn't think I'd have had room to do that!

In NH passing on the right is legal if you do not leave the pavement (driving on grass would make it illegal). FL and NJ are the same.

Mass it is illegal to pass on the right.

This is one law that varies from state to state and even the "legality" of it can differ.

Actually, it is legal here in MA, when the other vehicle is turning left, if there's room, it's safe, (the sun is in Scorpio, it's a blue moon,) etc, etc. I had to look it up for my father after some ripped out the side of his truck by making a right turn from the left hand.

In WA State, it is legal to use the shoulder to pass a vehicle turning left.

This guy was just an idiot, though.
