  • Eating whilst driving......WTF???

I was driving back from the off leash dog park early Saturday morning and decided to take a slightly different route home. I'm cruising down a 3 lane road in the middle lane behind a silver station wagon of some unknown make. The speed limit on the road is 70km/h but the car in front seems to hover between 50-60km/h.

Getting annoyed, I change lanes to overtake and as I pass I look over to see the driver (female, early 20's) holding a bowl of insant noodles in one hand a fork in the other and trying to eat them whilst attempting to navigate her car (presumably with her knees)

    W...T....F...??????

I've seen people eating some pretty stupid things whilst driving (the truckie with a full roast dinner on his lap is an image I'll not easliy forget) but who the hell eats instant noodles in the car, whilst driving at 7am on a Saturday morning???

Ok that's pretty nuts...I'll wolf down a burger or chicken sandwich since I can get hubby to peel back the wrapped and stick it in my hand so I can keep my other hand on the wheel and eyes on the road at all times, but anything more complicated...no way.

Now that's just asking for trouble! Granted, I'll grab the occasional French fry, piece of (opened) candy, or even chug a soda...but trying to eat noodles takes the cake (pun intended ) for outright stupidity.

I very often eat while driving, but always make sure it's something that won't fall apart and that I don't have to look at (chicken nuggets or fries with no sauce or ketchup, yes; Whopper, no). DEFINITELY not any kind of soup!
Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.

Thats pretty intense. I think the worse I've done is onion rings with dipping sauce in the cup holder. What's really dumb is she could have stuck the Ramen in a mug and just drank it

Holy whoa! I've eaten while driving, but that's like a personal pizza, and only at stop lights.

I admit, being the asshole I can be I would have been severely tempted to get that chick into an evasive maneuver...

A cup of noodles? Ok, that's bad. Worst I've heard of was from a friend of mine who passed someone eating a salad. While driving a stick shift.

Wow. Do you even have any limbs free when driving a stick?

Most of the time, yes. One hand and one foot, except when changing gear. In the city I wouldn't dare eating, but if you keep more or less the same speed, it's no more trouble than in an automatic.

I have known people who could smoke, talk on the phone, and drive a stick at the same time (through the city where it's stop go stop go slown down speed up slow down stop go).....it befuddled me.

Driving a manual/stick isn't that much harder than driving an automatic. Plus for people who drive manuals, changing gears is done quickly without thinking. (After driving for at least several months that is. Kinda like touch typing after spending too many hours at your computer. :-P )

Also it's pretty easy to drive a manual/stick one handed, obviously not while going round a bendy bit of road though. (think you got an abundant number of straight roads across the pond there though. Well seemed like it when I last visited, lol. ^_^ )

Personally I don't eat while driving unless it's something you can pop in your mouth without needing to move your head where you can't keep an eye on the road. (Or drink either, unless someone is in the car with me guiding a straw into my mouth. and that sounds sort of wrong. ^_^ )

Well enough of my waffling, time to lurk more. ^_^

I have learned to onehanded unscrew a bottle, drink from it and put the screwtop back on without looking away from traffic. Survival skills in the summer .

Thanks for the responses on driving stick. I tried once, and failed miserably. Haven't touched standard since.

And I've done that for cups, how to take a drink while still looking at the road. Though I always use lids unless the drink is something thick, like a smoothie or applesauce. And no food that requires more than just one hand or drawing my attention from the road.
