While running some errands today I had some jerk tailgating me and straddling the double yellow. Behind him was a cyclist. Also driving aggressively.

We got to a two lane road (2 each direction) near a mall and a bunch of strip malls and they go flying past. At one of the lights, the car driver, slams on his brakes even though it was green with cyclist still tailgating him.

Well, the cyclist looses control begins to wabbble and smacks into the rear bumper, putting a nice tire sized dent in it and making it a V shape. He falls off the bike. Driver jumps out. As I slowly drive by thsi mess, the driver says somethign to the effect of "due, i was only trying to have fun. I'm sorry man." to the cyclist. Some idea of Fun.

Being a major road in town by the mall it usually has plenty of Police traffic. Hope they have to try to explain that one.

Woah; so he admitted he was messing with the biker. Hmm, but then the biker was also being agressive. I'd say the police would count them both at 50/50 fault.

Still, I hate people messing with bikers. People think it's funny to randomly run my boyfriend off the road, even when he's riding on the shoulder; one truck crossed the rumble strip, roared-up on him, and he had to choose between getting hit or jumping into the gully on the side of the road. He chose the gully, and had to buy a new front wheel. He's been involved in 2 accidents like this, and 2 hit and runs. I want him to mount a camera, so he can get the plates of these douchebags!

The laws about following too close apply to cyclists as well.

I think a great deal of the friction between motorists and cyclists stems from the fact that so many drivers aren't aware of the laws pertaining to cyclists, and so many cyclists aren't aware of the rules of the road.

Suppose the car in this case had to make a sudden stop for a totally legitimate reason; The douche on the bike still would have wound up kissing the rear bumper because he was following too closely.

In my experience the drivers don't know the rules that apply to cyclists, and hound the cyclists for it. The cyclists know what they're doing around here, mostly.

A few weeks ago I was stopped at a light (on my bike) when a cyclist pulled up on my left and there was a taxi behind her. The taxi driver was cursing her out for being in the middle of the lane. But the provincial driver's handbook says right in it that cyclists are allowed to take the center of the lane or ride on the right-hand side. I wanted to ask him when was the last time he'd picked up that book

It seems I may have not been clear. It was a beat up, rusty, motorcycle vs car.

That's also the case where I live, cyclists know what they're doing, while many drivers don't know that the rules of the road apply to cyclists. Usually, they get into a bike lane without looking to see if there's a cyclist there. Since I see that all the time, the only way I'll ride a bike these days is those stationary ones at the gym.
