Just for the record I wasn't driving, my husband was. I will deliberately not use left/right due to US/UK driving side conflicts :P
We took a trip to the local supermarket for a few odds and ends. We drive a Silver Citroen Picasso Desire. (Like this but with silver trim instead of the black) This is a large car. It's technically a "mini mpv" or "mini people carrier" depending on opinion. We can fit a 2-seater sofa in the back, it's not small.
We spot a parking place and swing outwards a little (to compensate for a larger car's turning circle) ready to pull in to the bay. At this point we were about 70% on the "wrong" side of the road.
As we begin to turn inwards towards the bay suddenly another smaller silver car appears alongside us! My husband brakes and comes to a stop, the other car doesn't. CRUNCH. She's hit our passenger-side wheel arch.
Discussions ensue and the following points were raised:
Her: I didn't see your indicator.
We were definitely indicating, it was still on at the point of impact.
Her Mother: Your indicator must not be working, i would have told her to stop if i saw it.
We tested it. Worked fine.
Her: It was our right of way!
She was Behind us and we were still occupying the area she presumably thought her car should be occupying in the road.
Her: I didn't know you were turning.
Indicator, car park, open bay, us swinging out a bit to pull in, no bays on other side....hmm.
Eventually the damage was assessed, her car: some paint removed and a dent in the drivers side wheel arch. Our car: Her paint was on our car, that's it. Our car was one of the last Picasso models to be built mostly in metal, this gives it a lot of damage resistance.
she must have realised she was in the wrong because she said "I'm not bothered about it if you're not" and drove away.
*sigh*
