  • Motorcyclist Flirting With Death

Last night, bf and I were on the way to a friend's house to follow her and her bf to a buffet out of town.

I was taking the way I usually take to work, and in front of me was a cyclist not only without a helmet, but only wearing jeans and a tshirt and probably just sneakers.

We get to the exit, and he straddles lanes when they begin to split off (it's a T intersection at the light).

Right before I get into the right lane, he WHIZZES right over in front of me. He was within inches of me turning him into roadkill.

I tooted the horn and he blew the red light and whizzed off as fast as he could.

I've seen more and more motorcycle drivers acting like they are in their SUVs or something. Tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic. I even saw this one guy that passed in the same lane as another car. I was just waiting for the car to swerve over just a bit like they usually do but then that would have delayed my trip that much longer.

I always wear my seatbelt, so I'm not really phased by our laws, but I cannot believe that cyclists do not have to wear helmets or let alone even proper footwear. They aren't even enclosed!

The only bikers I ever see these days wearing helmets and proper gear are the old timer leisure bike Harley types, with their jackets and chaps and full gear. And they are actually worth respecting as fellow traffic. They don't pull the crap that the crotch riders and other hogdogs do. I swear, every day this summer, I have seen a cyclist without a helmet and wearing just regular clothes.

Too hot to wear all that gear, you say? Then don't ride.

We have helmet laws here but I'll have to agree with Jay Leno that helmet laws are trying to protect a head that doesn't need it. Sadly there is no opt out clause where if some gets in an accident without a helmet they don't get the full extent of insurance because they basically said, "I don't give a crap what happens..."
