  • They Keep Trying to Destory My Car...One Piece At a Time

Alright, so there's a stretch of road that has a speed limit of 55 around here but it isn't really a highway. It's more like a country bumpkin road with a lot of weird off shoots down to farms and whatever. Well my roommate and I are coming back from a baby shower and her little silver Ford is in front of my big black Chevy and we're behind a row of cars that are all doing about 55 maybe a little over but definitely not 60 yet.

Guy at the front of the line figures out he missed his turn. Slams on the brakes so hard that every single person in the line (not me for some reason, my car brakes like a demon) skids, my roommate's car fishtails and my brakes make this sickening clicking sound. My roommate's leftover cupcakes FLY all over her car, my laundry basket I had in the back shoots forward and I get covered in socks, I have a mark on my shoulder from my seatbelt, and I thank whatever angel was watching me that I didn't hit my roommate (some of the baby shower gifts were in her trunk and there were two people in her backseat.)

Idiot who caused all this sits there for a little bit (panicking over a missed turn?) before turning down a different road.

Now my brakes make the straining clicking sound every single time I put my foot down on them even if the car is stationary and the keys are out of the ignition. The nice mechanics at the shop got under it and said it's okay to drive for now but I might want my home mechanics (these ones were at school) to take a look at them. And I'm still finding rogue socks every so often.

My previous car would occasionally make a clicking sound when I stepped on the clutch, and on several routine service visits the mechanics at "French beaten by English longbows" Hyundai couldn't find the problem. Eventually, I took a look at it myself, and found that the clevis pin linking the clutch pedal to the pushrod for the master cylinder was retained by a cotter pin, and depending on how the clevis pin was rotated, one "leg" of the cotter pin could catch on the brake pedal, then let go with a "click". Adjusting the bend on the cotter pin fixed the problem - hope your issue is this simple.

It's things like this that serve as a good reminder that you should try to never have loose objects in the car. Thankfully, this time it was cupcakes and socks.
