  • I-91 fun

So I was driving on 91 north this afternoon, and got caught in some backed up traffic. The backup was long enough that i had no idea what was going on up front. there wasnt an exit for about a mile and a half. and we sat in traffic for at least and hour (to go about a mile...)

during that time i noticed a few idiots. at the spot where we first got stuck, there was an entrance ramp to our right, and a few tractor trailers coming in. as we get closer to where the merging lane ends, and the last trailer is straightening out, two idiots are trying to squeeze in between that trailer and the one that was already in the lane behind it. that trailer did not want them in. so what happens? the two cars go around the barely straightened out trailer and speed off in the breakdown lane. ughhh.

a little bit later i see some half wit cut across the median. uphill grass. ok this half wit is lucky the ground wasnt muddy or wet, good luck pulling out into 80mph traffic from a dead stop. (somehow they made it) (i normally drive 65-75, but i constantly get passed, real fast w/e)

we are approaching another entrance ramp on the right. this time there isnt anyone coming in (i assume they blocked that entrance ramp where ever it was coming from) so what do i see? bunches and bunches of cars taking the entrance ramp as an exit ramp. i wonder how that worked itself out when they get to the end of it. finally we are getting closer to the accident area. 3 lanes have to merge to 2. trailer didnt want me in, so i waited for the next one. and after that, smooooth sailing. from what i read it was a rollover crash, but that was all cleaned up and all i saw was about 5 state trooper cars or so doing measurements and stuff.

no i didnt wanna sit in traffic that long, but i also wasnt going to pull stunts like those other idiots.

in other news, i read some idiot was walking inside the West Rock Tunnel in New Haven, and there was some highway fence in the left lane? so there were some accidents there, NOT a place u want one.

and the other day a mountain lion was hit on the merritt parkway i believe. yea, a mountain lion, theyre starting to show up again haha. i did see 2 living squirrels just chillin' along the merritt parkway earlier today, just munchin along. cute, but dangerous haha

I remember a couple years ago, I was heading south on the Garden State, just past the Pascack Valley toll barrier, and I see a whole damn flock of Canada geese start to cross the highway. Single file.

I got by just before the lead goose got off the shoulder into the travel lane. Never found out what happened, but that had the potential to cause all sorts of interesting nastiness.

(And yes, I have seen dead geese at the side of the road on occasion. They love the GSP because of the wide green medians, but once they land there, there's often no way out but taking off again.)

Par for the course here, no? I mean, how many other states feel the need to put up on signs on half the highways saying "Do not drive in breakdown lane"?

Once, I saw a real nasty back-up going the other direction (was a parking lot from Mt Vernon to Marysville). Cars were backing up the on-ramps! I think at least some of that was being directed by State Patrol, though. There was a crash blocking ALL lanes, and no one was going anywhere.

that reminds me! some guy did do that...fast. what an idiot

and yes its sad we have to post signs saying "no driving in breakdown lane"

sometimes the tractor trailers will sit and block that lane. ftw

I'll admit to using the entrance ramp as an exit ramp once. In my defense, many others were doing the same. I was coming back from Philly (having gone to a Ring of Honor show) and took the wrong fork in the highway (going on 495-South instead of 495-West to get home). There was a major accident of some kind on the highway, and so folks were getting off wherever they could to try to get around it.

I, like many others, went up an on ramp and detoured around Fedex Field until I got back to the highway and found my way home. The whole time I was doing it, though, I was thinking "Ohhhh, I'm gonna get busted." I didn't, but I don't relish the idea of doing it again in the future.

For the fail, actually. The breakdown lanes should be left open for additional emergency vehicles. Be mad at people using breakdown lanes to bypass traffic, but let the cops deal with the enforcement.

Ouch. Luckily, around here it is possible to (carefully) drive off the interstate and across the grass onto the access road. I would NOT want to deal with driving backwards the wrong way down an on ramp!

Rob was running with VaBeach1 and worked the accident in 88 on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge ... that had traffic tied up for 2 states.

Took me over 1 hr to get home today.....really hate that commute

Once I was stuck on I-95 due to a accident. traffic was crawling thru the one open lane. I could just see the lighes ahead. Some moron speeds by in the breakdown lane.

When I finally get to the accident scene 15 minutes later, the moron had been stopped by the police. From the looks of it they were making him wait until they finished clearing the accident before they dealt with him.

Bwahahaha! I love it when those douchenozzles get busted like that.

Dad and I were going on a trip once and were stuck in traffic in the right lane. This guy cruises past on the shoulder and Dad says something like "Nice to see you're more important than us!" (He didn't say 'asshole,' given that I was like thirteen at the time, and he was Trying To Set A Good Example, but I know he was thinking it.) I watch, and see another car pull out behind the douchenozzle... and then see the blue lights light up. Douchenozzle got busted. I reported it to Dad happily, and we shared a good laugh as we passed him later, being written up by the cop.
