  • Never a cop around when ya need one

So last Friday Night/Saturday Morning (around 2am) I'm going with a friend of mine to get something to eat. We're patiently waiting at a red light to turn left onto a major road.

This road that we are turning onto is a 4 lane highway with a concrete barrier separating east and westbound traffic. At the corner of this intersection to our immediate left is a gas station with access to the road we are on and the highway we will be turning onto. An SUV pulls up behind us, turns left into the gas station (which is closed for the evening) And pulls over to the 4 lane highway exit and comes to a complete stop. Waits....waits.... then turns left. Yes this means that since the concrete barrier was in his way he was driving into oncoming traffic.

My friend and I just look at each other with a look and just shake out heads. Fortunately for the moron there were only 4 cars two of which changed lanes to avoid a collision. We both were looking around hoping a cop would pull this guy over. He managed to make it up to the next intersection and pull into a road leading into one of the local shopping centers and then came to a complete stop again. So yeah... not only did he stop and stare at the concrete wall for a few minutes, he made a conscious choice to ignore it and endanger himself and others. WHAT a moron.

Asshat's probably so used to doing this that it didn't occur to him to check for a divided highway before he started his maneuver.

(Driving through private property to avoid a traffic control device is illegal in this state, I believe.)

As it is in many, iirc. There was a time, maybe 20 years ago, when gas stations and other corner-lot places would put spike strips down (on days when they were closed) -- with big signs telling people this -- to prevent people from crossing thru their lots. Didn't always work ...And when the people with the now-shredded tires would occasionally try to sue, the lawyers/cops/judges would simply say something like "So, you admit that you were illegally cutting the corner, then?" (it also counts as tresspassing, as the place was closed) ... Said suits tended to die out quite quickly for some odd reason

It's perfectly legal here in California, but you have to come to a complete stop before returning to the public road.
