And I'm not talking about in parking lots and driveways, where people regularly back out of parking spots. I'm talking about in the streets!
Can't decide which lane 1
Came up to a red light. There are two lanes: one to go right/straight, the other to turn left. I'm turning right. The SUV ahead of me is at an angle that tells me he got into this lane at the last second, but he wasn't blocking the other lane, so all was good.
There's a blind corner just before this intersection, so I was keeping an eye on my rearview in case someone came around the corner too fast. (On multiple occasions, people will come tearing around that corner when traffic is backed up, and will have to slam on their brakes and swerve into the left lane to avoid hitting stopped cars. It's a really crappy place for a blind corner.) I notice a minivan slow and come to a stop in the left lane, with the passenger gesturing wildly at the right lane. The minivan stopped, then put on it's blinker to get into the right lane.
Well, at least our lane will get the light first, so that won't really effect anyone behind them wanting to turn left...
Then I face forward again, and the SUV has its reverse lights on. He backs up has far as he can, then rolls forward again, then backs up...he was turning around to get into the other lane! Remember, based on his angle of approach, he was in the other lane before changing his mind. Back up, pull forward, back up, pull forward...
He starts to squeak into the left lane, but doesn't quite make it. At this point, our lane has the green, but the left lane is still stopped waiting for its arrow. I have just enough room in my tiny little car to inch around him and make my light. The large truck behind me wasn't so lucky...
Can't decide which lane 2
On our way to the grocery store, we saw this gem. This particular stoplight has one lane that goes hard right, shallow right, shallow left. The left lane is only a shallow left.
We're stopped, waiting to turn right, when we hear SCREEEE and a car comes to a stop beside us. He goes into reverse, and backs way up (there were at least three cars behind us) to get into our lane. When the light changed, he went shallow right.
Here's the funny part: taking the shallow right or the shallow left take you to the same street! The shallow right leads to the next road, where you merge onto it going northbound. The shallow left will intersect a little further back on the same road, where you can turn northbound (and catch up with the merge) or southbound, or keep going straight into town. So, if he wanted to go in that direction but was in the wrong lane, he could have just taken the shallow left, then moved over and turned right at the next light...
Cutting off semis
A semi was trying to take a hard right-on-red at an intersection. There was a right turn/straight lane, and a left-turn lane. Naturally, a semi hauling a long trailer was going to need to take up both lanes. He signaled accordingly, moved to the left lane, and started to turn right, but...
SCREEE! As he was turning, some little blue car tried to pass him on the right. The semi managed to stop, and the blue car had to reverse and back all the way up to let the semi complete his turn.
Bonus 1: Don't you give me that look!
Truck leaving a parking lot almost cut us off today. We'd just turned left from a parking lot, and were already well established in our lane. The truck driver looked at us, saw us, and then proceeded to roll forward. We braked, he stopped, and he gave us "the gesture", you know, that "WTF?" gesture. I flipped him off for being an idiot. We were established in the lane before you even began to move, so don't give us the look!
Bonus 2: Just go already!
I was approaching a double-lane roundabout, going straight through on the outer lane. There was a car ahead of me. On the cross street, another car wanted to enter the roundabout.
The car ahead of me went through. The car on the cross street started to go through. Now, if he'd just gone for it, it would have been fine. Maybe cutting it a little close, but there was enough room between me and the car ahead of me that he could have done it.
Idiot decided to hesitate, though, and stop, so that he was completely blocking the outer lane! So I had to slow down and swerve around him. He should have just gone for it.
