I finally saw karma in action today. This morning I'm driving to work and as I enter the 'flashing light' school zone I realize the car behind me is coming up way too fast. She zips around me going at least 45 and pulls in front. Just seconds and a guy holding a coffee cup and talking to the crossing guard jumps in the road and starts waving her over. She pulls over and as I pass I realize the coffee cup is actually a hand held speed detector and he's a cop. And he looks furious.

I hear those tickets are not cheap.

I don't see as much speeding, tailgating, and general jerkwadery and douchebaggery in the whole rest of the city as I see in the tiny little school zone up the road from my house.

And most of this from other parents who you'd think would be respectful of the protocol that has been put into place to keep their kids safer.

Ah, but it's to keep their little darlings safe from other drivers; they're excellent drivers, they'd never cause an accident - why should it apply to them too?

Well that's just it. They want THEIR kids to be safe. Screw those other kids >_>

I don't know what it's like in the OP's state, but I just did a quick check for the laws for mine.

In 2007, the General Assembly amended the state's school zone speed limit law to double the fine amount for speeding in a school zone. A misdemeanor speeding offense carries a maximum possible penalty of $150 plus court costs. Thus, speeding in a school zone warrants a penalty of as much as $300 plus court costs. Speeding violations also result in points being added to a driver's license. Points remain on your license for two years. Points for speeding are based on the number of miles over the speed limit the driver is going. If you reach 12 points in a two-year period, the state suspends your driving privileges for six months.
Just sliding down the razor blade of life.

I would hope that any state worth its salt would be similar. After all, I see often enough in different states that I drive through that speeding in a construction zone is double the fine, so why not speeding in a school zone? Especially the ones that alert you with the flashing lights on the speed limit signs.

We don't use Points here, but in the general area, they changed the MINIMUM fine for any ticket/violation to $125+court costs, a few years back. They had gotten tired of people just routinely ignoring tickets and not changing their ways because a $20 fine was no big deal to most people. It helped ^_^

I read a statistic yesterday that the majority of children hit by cars in school zones are hit by parents of other kids that attend that school.

And are we really all that surprised?

                      Definitely double

When I went through there yesterday I noticed there are signs up that say Fines are doubled in the school zone. I didn't notice them before, guess cause I don't speed through there. I'm in Florida and we've had a rash of kids being hit going to school or waiting for the bus in this area. I would want people being careful when my son is out there, so I'm careful when other kids are there.
