  • Left Lane and Cut-Off Slowpokes *plus bonus story*

This post is about a peeve of mine: slowpokes! But not just any slowpokes!

I dunno what it is, but I have seen a huge increase in left-lane toodlers. These people travel in the left lane on highways, going very slowly, and never move over to allow passing. Sometimes they will passive-aggressively ride along parallel with the right-lane car to keep everyone behind them. ARRRG, move OVER already! Right lane travel, left lane PASSING.

Also, I really don't mind being cut off, in general. You're in a hurry, okay, whatevs. But what I can't stand is if you cut me off and proceed to go like 10 miles per hour. If you're going to cut me off, at least move your ass!

The other night, I was riding on the main road when I approach a ramp that's funneling cars onto my road. They have a yield, but this guy just decides to go without looking and cut me off. Then he, of course, goes super slow forcing me to slow way down. It was the end of my night and my patience was in the negative numbers so maybe this was immature, but I decide to pass him and get in front of him. I wasn't a jerk; I used my signal and was far enough ahead of him. But supposedly this damaged his pride or something because only then did he speed WAY up and get right on my bumper angrily. Oh, excuse me, I guess lowly old me was supposed to be stuck behind you going 15 and LIKE it.

We ended up parting ways soon after so at least he didn't follow me like a psycho.

I don't know about other parts of the country, but in the DC area, this is called "Nestoring."

Named after a man who wrote into a column in the Washington Post some thirty years ago, Dr. John Nestor, who said he did this kind of thing to try to slow down the speeders. As you might understand, he pissed off a lot of readers.

I'm not seeing how you were sucky or immature for simply passing a slower car. That's what you do, safely pass if you want to go faster.

We've seen something like this a lot lately. Hubs will have cruise control on. A car will come up on the left lane, and then just kind of hang there, then speed up like they want to pass, then drop back...lather, rinse repeat.

Sometimes that's due to 'speed leeching.' They're not really trying to keep pace with you, but their mind is using your car's position as a way to judge their own speed. For fun, slowly let up on the accellerator and see how slow you can bring them down to before they realize it.

See, I do that sometimes. I have a bad lead foot, and on long hauls when I'm tired, it's nice to let someone else control the speed. However, I always follow behind them. I don't ride next to them in the passing lane.

But I will suggest that we drop our speed like that next time we encounter one.

I'm starting to think more people need to learn control of their gas pedal if they aren't going to or can't use cruise control.

If I come flying up behind you, because you're going 60, and I go to pass you, STOP accellerating and matching my speed as I try to go past you, having to start going at speeds I don't want to, just to get around you. Cuz I know damn well as soon as I go back behind you, you'll be back to 60. Give it up, or learn how to maintain a speed.

I can't really be sure who is doing it on purpose and who just cannot maintain a speed, but it gets annoying. Someone is way ahead of me, then putzing at 60, then trying to go 65 WITH me as I pass, even up to 70 as I try to pass, then they are flying at 75, then back down to 60........

And ANYONE who knowingly merges at 40 mph, causes a jam or a frenzy, then rockets off at 80 mph as soon as they are comfortably in the left lane, can fuck off.

                blas, yes, exactly!

That's a lot of what I've been seeing, too. I honestly think a lot of it *is* on purpose, which ticks me off. I also think a lot of people out there consider passing them as some sort of "insult". Like, WTF? Really? It's not personal, dude, I just need to get to work in this century.

RecoveringKinkoid: The immature part was more because my exit was coming up rather soon. I guess I COULD have waited behind him, but I was so tired and impatient that I passed him. I did pass safely, however.

I like to think that as well. It almost always happens when I'm the last car in a line of vehicles trying to pass some slow poke. It's like they realize "Oh, right! This is a freeway! Duh, I better speed up!" just in time to match my speed.

we get people like that too... people who are in la-la land puttering along on cruise-control in the left lane as if there's no one else on the road.

i mean sure lately i haven't felt like doing 80 like I normally do and feel like just doing 70-75 but... I do it in the right hand lane, not the left.

but yeah nothing like having to pass someone in the right hand lane cos there's a moron in the left doing the speed limit or less.

as for "passing on the right" IIRC that's only illegal here if you're using the right hand shoulder to pass. using the right hand lane however is perfectly legal... just not really desirable.

Yes, it is ridiculous. I'm not insulted when someone passes me. I admit on the road to the coast, I do tend to drive slightly slowly as it's a very winding, twisting road. If I look in my rearview and see cars behind me, I'll pull over to the side as soon as I can and let them all pass me.
