  • Lane merge fun (for once, I did not get yelled at)

This happened a couple weeks ago. There's a particular stretch of road that leads from a relatively busy town into my little nothing town. It's a road with two lanes going in the same direction, and the right lane becomes the left lane right in front of a busy gas station.

Where the lanes merge into one, there is a nice curb. Basically, if someone happens to be in the left lane right beside you or following close behind you, you can't move over without hitting them. I encountered this issue during heavier-than-usual traffic where I had to sit like a jackass with my turn signal on where the right lane ended because when I was going to move over, someone was beside me and had I moved, I'd have hit them.

Someone was nice enough to let me go after a few seconds. I'm not even sure if that was the right thing to do, but I feared I'd cause an accident had I just cut someone off by nosing in front of them at the last second.

Shockingly, while I did get yelled at initially by the Backseat Driver Mother, once I explained to her why I did what I did, she actually understood. That was the biggest shock of all...not being told how dumb I am.

Oh I hate it when that happens. What's even worse is when you get stuck, waiting for an opening to merge, but some jackoff behind you is honking their horn at you. Because obviously you should risk your life just because they are in a hurry.

The ones I really hate are those who drive by, see that you're stuck, and honk at you. I don't even think they're doing it because you're in their way (which I'm not). They just want to honk at someone to feel superior. They assume that not being able to make a lane change in time = irresponsible driver, which is a load of bull, but assholes like to think they are perfect and never make mistakes.

Indeed....I think one person did honk at me, but I sure didn't see them going around me if they were in such a big, special hurry.

I have honestly never seen anyone stop at the spot I had to stop at (which is why I worried I did wrong by stopping there). Then again, I've also never seen so much traffic on that road as I did on that day. I was very grateful for the person behind me in the left lane who let me move - sometimes when I think there are just assholes in my town, I occasionally see a nice driver.
