  • Live COPS: Drive-Thru Edition (Warning: Long Read Ahead)

Did we have a night here last night or what? Bad enough we had to deal with the time change, but a surefire way to get the neighbors out to socialize seems now to be when there's a wreck.

I had just settled down with the laptop for a few and had just checked in on FB when I heard a loud SLAMBAMBOOOM that literally shook the windows shortly after midnight (actually it was right after 1 but I'd already set my clocks back.)

I jumped up, looked out the window in the office - saw nothing, so I flew through the house and opened the front door. All I could see was the front end of a dark car on the opposite corner in the parking lot of the beauty shop, with a scrunched up front end.

I hollered through at my brother (who was still awake on online) we've had a wreck. Next thing I knew, Mom was trying to walk into the living room (she had to stop and sit down at the desk) while I went outside to get a better look.

A small crowd had gathered on the sidewalk outside the beauty shop and I could clearly hear someone on a cell phone giving the address and describing the intersection. I went to the ramp and could just make out the rear end of another vehicle in front of the beauty shop.

The car, a 2000-something Buick LeSabre, had went through the front door of the beauty shop and the front end was inside. The front wall was pushed inward.

Meanwhile, Mom got her toboggan on and her sweatshirt and shoes and came outside, got into her wheelchair and drove down the ramp to go see if she could help.

The car sitting on the corner was smoking a bit and there were 2 people still in and I could hear some of the people out there saying something about two others had taken off on foot behind the shop. Mom came back and told my brother to grab the phone to make sure help was coming.

He went and grabbed the phone but handed it to me (he has a speech impediment and it's hard for him to explain what's going on and the dispatchers have a hard time understanding him) so I explained what had happened and I was told it had already been called in and help was on the way.

Before we knew it, here came the ambulance, 6 cop cars and then the fire truck pulling up the rear. The neighbors directly behind us had come up to the fence and were watching, so I walked off the ramp (as I was having trouble hearing them over all the sirens) and went out into the yard to join them at the fence. Another neighbor (who had just moved in on the corner at the main road) came over and we were watching everything.

The road was complete blocked by the emergency vehicles and police - one car came up the side road and had to back up and turn around b/c he couldn't get through. And add to that the group of 3 girls who were making stupid comments about the accident (ignorance has a way of showing up at the worst times) as the two people in the car that was hit (a Honda Accord) were put on stretchers and were put into the ambulances for transport to the hospital.

The neighbors decided they'd seen enough and all went back home - I went back inside (it was chilly outside and I was catching a chill) to get my big coat and shoes on, then went across the street to make sure Mom hadn't turned into a popsicle yet.

I was quickly filled in on what had happened: the driver of the Buick was going way too fast and hit the Honda head on, which caused the Honda to spin around and the Buick hit it in the rear before going over the curb and into the front door of the shop.

Turned out not only did the guy who was driving the Buick and his buddy fled on foot, he had actually WALKED BACK UP TO THE SCENE. He was identified by people on the scene and the cops had him cuffed and in the back of one of the cruisers before you could say "uncle." Mom explained further that the boy's dad had shown up and argued with the cop that "his son wouldn't do that." Kinda hard for him to prove that when his son is sitting in the back of a cop car and his car is inside a shop with the license plate still on the back to identify it - but whatever.

A wrecker with a lift back was approaching and backing up to get the Buick hooked up and pulled out. The owner of the shop and her hubby arrived on the scene and they were just as confused as could be over what had happened - one of the officers explained what had happened and gave her a card with a number to call if she had questions. She had also taken a few pictures of the scene w/her phone (I think for insurance reasons - she's going to have one heck of a claim to file as well as the charges against the dipshit who drove into her building.) One of our neighbors was also trying to take pictures, but his battery was running down (and I'd left mine inside the house - any other time I'd have it in my pocket.)

The guys managed to get the car out - and by some mere miracle the front wall of the shop didn't cave in - it pulled out and seemed to go back almost in place. The foundation of the building is damaged underneath the siding, but there's clearly major structural damage. A city inspector came out and put a condemned sign up and yellow tape as the car was loaded up to be taken away.

And the Buick didn't even look like it was that badly damaged - one of the front wheels looked like it was pushed out and upward a bit but the body looked eerily decent considering.

The Honda wasn't so lucky - it was not only smashed in the front (with half the front knocked clean off) but also had been hit in the rear also. I could also see the deployed air bags through the driver's door, which had been left open. I'd say that car is a total loss.

Disaster company came sometime after I'd gotten too cold and went back home and boarded up the building to keep looters out.

So now we've got a boarded up beauty shop (and an owner who's going to be losing business b/c of it since it can't open right now and employees who can't work) one guy in jail (the other one will probably be picked up soon) two other people in the hospital (and I don't know what their condition is - Mom said the guy was complaining of his neck and shoulders hurting and the woman with him seemed to be hurting all over) and a dad who's going to have a big mess with his car insurance company. All because some little young dipshit who obviously can't drive and doesn't need to.

I'm totally upset just by reading this. That poor shop owner! How many months of business will she/he lose? Reminds me to be mindful of speed limits.

We have no idea how long the shop will stay closed . . . another bad part is that if they can't fix the building and it has to be torn down, she can't build another beauty shop there b/c of zoning codes for our neighborhood.

We're zoned as residential, but when that code went into effect, the building was already there and so it was grandfathered in. So basically as long as the existing building is there, it can be used as a commercial business (it had been a small variety store before the owner bought the building.) If the building is torn down it cannot be rebuilt as such - a residential dwelling has to there, since the original building will no longer exist.

She found this out a few years ago when she went downtown to see about the codes b/c she wanted to add onto the existing building. Because of the zoning laws we have, she can't do that either - she can only repair or reface (such as new siding) on the existing building.

Bad things happen every day to good people.

        Awful. And scary.

We're having cars running into buldings here every couple of days. It's getting so all I have to here from the newscaster is, "It's happened again..." and I know what they're going to say next.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

Had something similar happen when I was still an Art Shop Slave....Middle of January and freezing out, I was at the register freezing my butt off when I heard a slight thud from the dance studio next to us. Nobody thought anything of it, it just honestly sounded like a car door slamming. A customer came into the store and exclaimed to me "Theres a car parked in the unit next to you guys!" At first I thought he meant a car PARKED in the lot. I asked "What....???" Him: "A car smashed through the unit next to you! I think its a dance studio...the car is all the way at the back of the place! I've called 911!" I went to take a look, as my coworker took over the register....Holy crap! At that moment, two fire trucks, two cruisers and an ambulance flew around the corner. Also, our store's fire alarm started to sound. Apparently the car had hit some sensor. We were actually closing up shop when this had happened and as I was leaving, our store owner came flying around the corner of the parking lot. Next day, I found out the woman who was driving the car accidently shifted into Drive when she was meaning to back up.

Sorry if I threadjacked, the OP story reminded me of this.

I also meant to say that when this happened, the dance studio was at least closed for the night and nobody was hurt. Not even the driver.

and argued with the cop that "his son wouldn't do that."

isn't that always the case. you could have the suspect committing the crime in front of both the cops and the parents and the parents will STILL say "My baby didn't do it!"

Oh yeah, considering that it was the dad's car sitting inside the shop, ass end sticking out with the license plate showing for all to run a check on.

Believe me, the cops have probably heard that one a gazillion times . . . I suspect they're pretty much immune to it now (are there shots for that, BTW?)

AFAIK, the kid is still in jail. No word on the two people he injured, but the beauty shop is almost repaired.

Owner was there early Monday with a city inspector and an insurance adjustor, who also took pics of the damage. Tuesday there was a crew out there repairing and replacing the windows and front door. Today the crew came back to clean up their mess and the only thing it looks like now it needs is the siding replaced on the section that was ripped away, and the inspector to come back to make sure everything's okay before having the utilities restored.

The shop should be open again for business pretty soon. So that's some good news at least.

Do you know if drinking or drugs were involved? Or just a punk brat who doesn't know speed limits are not suggestions.

Don't know but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the boy was either drunk or high. Come to think of it, that's precisely the question I asked my Mom when I found out he'd been arrested.

Latest update: The beauty shop is almost finished with repairs. The siding was replaced Thursday and that mess cleaned up, then yesterday somebody was doing some painting work. And the owner and the other lady who works with her have been in and out all week, cleaning out the inside.

So it's moving right along. It should be back in business soon.
