  • Being Old Will Not Save You

Where I work, in one of the loveliest university towns, there are two assisted living complexes right on the main street in town. That means lots of buses on the street, people in wheelchairs or with walkers are common sights. But this was just stupid.

It was dusk, and I had just started my drive home. And slammed on my brakes. An elderly man and woman had decided that jaywalking in the near dark was a great shortcut back to the entrance to their complex, except it was more like jayhobbling, as he was pushing a walker and she was bent over at least 45 degrees. The main reason I saw them in the low light was because she had long gray hair and a light gray sweater, otherwise they would have just blended into the roadway. And been blended into the roadway.

My street has a couple of residences like that, and not enough crosswalks. People who have mobility problems want to take the shortest way home, not go all the way down the street, cross, and come all the way back.

I'm not excusing jaywalking, I'm bitching at city planners. :P

With age comes wisdom, I've been told. Yeah, right.

I have the same issues with the planners sometimes -- the thing is, I've seen people int he middle of a block, less than ten feet from a centrally-mounted crosswalk, jaywalk anyway >_< There are some things you can blame on the planners, and some that just have to be chalked up to potential Darwin Award winners...
