I am not exaggerating or being dramatic. If this guy hadn't finally stopped, at the very least, my whole front end would have smashed up and in and I probably would have been stuck inside, and probably never walked again, if I managed to live through it.
I was driving to Subway from the gym. Unfortunately, my attention tends to go to the side streets on this road, because there is a street where people are notorious for trying to slide through the stop sign, or quit caring/get impatient and just pull right out.
In fact, as I was approaching, a big red pickup was skirting further and further from the stop, and I was being a tad stubborn and refusing to panic and slow down for him, but ended up having to slow down a bit anyway because sure enough, he took his chance and at the last second, peeled out and took a turn just seconds from when I cleared the intersection.
As I got over that, I looked forward again........and...............OHHHHH FUCK!
One of those over-sized vans that are used to shuttle around handicapped/elderly people was backing out of a driveway. And NOT slowing down or stopping!
I slammed the brakes. So hard, so fast, my purse flew forward from the passenger seat, my seatbelt dug into my tummy, and I had the electric shocks of fear and adrenaline were going through every inch of me. I started breathing heavy and a few tears started forming all in those seconds while I was screaming "STOP!" (though of course, I'm sure he didn't hear).
I was stopped. The van was STILL backing out.
Don't know why I didn't do it simultaneously while I was slamming my brakes (well, you don't always think of what's best right away), so I laid on my horn. And I mean, laid on it like I did to the trucker who nearly killed me. I don't know why I also didn't think to look behind me and back up a bit just to save myself.
I am not embellishing or exaggerating. The van finally stopped. At about SIX inches from making contact with my car. He had been pulling out of that driveway so fast, he had to slam on his brakes when he finally hear my horn.
I kept on the horn because I was so mad. I even broke my own rule and whipped my arm out the window and screamed "WHAT THE FUCK?!"
He immediately rammed the gas and took off as fast as he could. I can only assume he was either humiliated, or in the most likely case, didn't want me to get his plates.
I didn't want to go psycho and drive that fast just to catch up with him, even though I really did want those plates to call in, because this is a BUSINESS that is supposed to carefully transport people!
Anyway, no lie, this fool was going 45 or so in the 30 mph zone to get away from me. I never made any attempt to speed up that fast just to chase him, I just did my usual 35 or so.
And then today on the way to the gym.............another one of those vans was just sitting. At a green light. Reading a map or some kind of paper. JUST SITTING there for several seconds while people honked at him.
And a year or so ago, one of their drivers blocked the entrance into our parking lot to grab a newspaper, and didn't move when he first noticed people were trying to get in.
Yep, it's complaint time. Unfortunately, I have no plates and no names. But maybe a bug in their ear would do well. I am going to encourage anyone who has an elderly or handicapped friend or family member NOT to use this service.
