  • 3 fails, 1 intersection

Saw all three of these at once!

So, the main road is 2 lanes each way, with separate left-turn-only lanes at the intersection, and a right-turn-only lane going southbound.

As we approach the right-turn-only lane, our light is red. In the lane next to us is a Silver SUV who's first (and at this time, only) in line at the red light. He's right on the line with the inner lane, and his wheels are cranked as if he wants to move left one lane.

Oncoming traffic gets a protected left-turn, and a dark-gray Prius decides to use that to do an illegal U-turn instead. They ended up turning right at the next light. They were clearly lost, because little did they know it would have been much more legal and safer to just make the left, then use the mini-mall parking lot to get where they needed to go...

Our light goes green, but not before Red SUV in the oncoming left lane tries to make a last-second cut ahead of us...and nearly plows into a pedestrian! He managed to come to a stop in time, now he's blocking oncoming traffic of course. The first pedestrian ran ahead and out of the way, but an elderly man backed up to the curb, flipping Red SUV off as it squeezed its way between the two pedestrians.

During all this, Silver SUV is, indeed, trying to move over a lane in the middle of the intersection. Never mind that there is nothing on the left for the next two blocks; the next light you can't turn left on b/c it's an off-ramp, and beyond that it's a bridge over the interstate. There is no reason to move over right away there, since traffic was light he could have just gone straight and safely (and legally!) switched lanes after he was through the intersection.

I turned to Hubs and cried "I don't want to share the road with these people anymore!"

    Bonus:

Almost forgot to add, later, I was driving down a road, and a large 18-wheeler was pulling right out of a driveway. He was slowly and carefully maneuvering his rig. There were five lanes (two one direction, a central turn lane, two the other direction), and he was taking up four of them. It was straight, traffic was light, and you could see him a mile away. I was in the fifth lane furthest from the rig, and I saw him blocks away.

I also saw a car in the fourth lane heading straight for the rig (that was in his lane) and not stopping. The rig saw the driver and stopped. The driver suddenly braked, swerved, and honked angrily.

Dude, you could have seen that truck a mile away, literally. There was no reason for that if you were even half paying attention!

Fortunately, the car behind the asshat politely came to a stop so the truck could complete its turn.

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
