I'll be the first to admit I was not the best driver when I was young. I didn't actually break any laws of the road but I bent them. I was too cocky and I drove too aggressively. This is two incidents where I brushed up with some scammers.
Incident #1: I'm driving down a back road in an industrial park with a pick-up about three of four car lengths in front of me. I look down to change the stereo and when I look up the pick-up is stopped in the middle of the road for no apparent reason (not pulled over to the side and no blinker not that a blinker would make sense as there was no side street or driveway entrance where we were).
I slammed on my brakes but just couldn't quite stop in time and we hit with a mild thud, bumper to bumper. I get out and I am relieved that there is no actual damage since I was clearly at fault (back in the day when bumpers were steel and not designed to collapse on impact). I go up to the drivers side window as the woman in the pickup had not exited her vehicle and that is when I am informed that the woman's back is hurt, she doesn't think she can get out of the car and she needs an ambulance. As luck would have it a police car comes down the road and stops to see what is happening.
The officer looks at the woman and the pickup and asks me to step back to my vehicle. He follows, asks me what happened and I give him my version of events. He tells me to get in my car and wait then goes to talk to the woman.
After talking to her for a few minutes she drives away clearly angry. He comes back to me and tells me that the woman is a known con artist out on bail for several criminal fraud charges and that he had convinced her that an insurance scam probably wouldn't be a good idea at this time. He told me to be careful as you never know who else is on the road with you and told me to have a good day.
