  • Cash isn't good enough for you?

BG: At our store, if you bring a return with a receipt, you will get the full refund. How you get it is a little more complicated. If you paid cash, you get cash. If you paid with credit card and the refund is more than $5.00, it goes back on the card you paid with; if $5.00 or less, it is returned in cash (I'm guessing due to fees we'd have to pay the credit card company). If you paid with debit, we have no way of returning it to your account, so you get cash.

Anyway, a customer returns something, I think it was a skein of yarn, and has the receipt. She paid with a debit card, and the refund was less than $3.00. So I do the refund and bring out the cash.

ME: Since you paid with a debit, you'll be getting cash back.
SC: (looking at me as if I were offering her a dead rat) What? Why can't you put it back in my account?
ME: I'm sorry ma'am, we have no way to do that.
SC: But if I paid with a credit card, you would?
ME: If the refund was more than $5.00, yes, less than that and you'd get cash back. I need you to sign here for your refund. (hands her a pen)
SC: I'll sign with my own pen, thank you! (pulls out her pen and signs the receipt. I give her the cash back.)
SC: This is ridiculous! I should get my refund back the way I paid for it! Are you a manager?
    ME: No ma'am--
SC: Get me a manager! And I don't appreciate you rushing me, I am the customer, you know!

No, I did not rush her. Yes, she is the customer, so were the five people behind her in the line she held up with her little tantrum. I called the AM and let her deal with it. The AM told her everything I told her; she even got the store manager over the headset, who reiterated everything I said.

SC didn't like what she heard and left the store in a dramatic flourish. I'm sure the SC told th AM what a horrible little rude rushing bitch I was, as well.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Well no wonder she wanted a manager. You offered her the use of your pen. That meant you were assuming that she (like most people) did not have one within easy access at all times. You tried to make something easy for her.

How dare you give good customer service!

Most stores around here, AFAIK, return the money to you as you paid it out: cash for cash, credit card for credit card, and debit card for debit card. Most of the grumbles I've heard come from people who DO want cash back! She sounds like someone who was just looking for something, anything, to whine about.

Seriously?!? It's not like you ripped her off. I agree she was probably running short in her checking, and now would have to go to the bank. Still, it was totally sucky to complain about it.

This is a SC we're talking about. Not a normal, sane customer. They'll throw bigger temper tantrums over far less.

Honestly, I hate carrying cash around, and look forward to the day it becomes completely obsolete, so I can completely understand why someone might be annoyed at being refunded in cash. It's not a big enough deal to shout at the cashier about, though.

Well, obviously she's insane, because no sane knitter or crocheter would return a skein of yarn. Stashes don't build themselves!

Even so, cash clears instantly; moreover, if SC is overdrawn or in danger of it, $3.00 is not likely to make that much difference.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Indeed. You think this would be a solution that pleases everyone but ... someone always has to be difficult.

although... if this is a banking issue for her, 3 dollars that would save her from an overdraft fee... that sounds like a personal issue on her part and not your job to fix.
