  • Why paying with a check is a bad idea and why our company no longer accepts them

No offense to anyone who pays with checks.
Nowadays it seems like checks are becoming less and less trustworthy. I suppose this is the reason why a lot, if not most places, allow you to pay your bill online, or even charge it to your credit card like some insurance companies I've seen do. I will only use checks to pay a bill through the mail.
I am talking about people who go inside a store and pay with checks. I am actually very surprised that the store even accept them anymore, as there has been way too many bounced checks. They're also the slowest way to pay while everyone has to wait for the person to write them out, and wouldn't you know a lot of check writers wait until everything is rung up to start filling out their check.
Ok, I am rambling, so on to the story. I answered the phone to take a delivery order for a customer. SCC= Stupid Check Customer
Me: Will this be cash or credit Maam?
    SCC: Do you accept checks?
Did I say, "Cash, credit, or checks?" I would have said checks if we accept them.
    Me: I'm sorry, we don't.
    SCC: Cancel the order then.
Me: Well, we do accept cash or cards.
SCC: You guys used to accept checks.
Yup we did, until people's checks started bouncing on us. Completely deceitful and a very unreliable way of paying for stuff if you ask me.
Me: We never have at this location, too many bounced checks.
SCC: Ok, never mind, just cancel the order.
    Me: Bye.
She wasn't really sucky, but seriously, only an idiot has only 1 form of payment. She might not have cash on her, but I don't see anything wrong with paying with a credit card, like 95% of our customers do anyway.
Once again, no offense meant to anyone who uses checks. But they are becoming less and less reliable. We'd be better off without them in my opinion.

One night at work I mentioned that since landline phones are on the way out, checks might be, too. My coworker said, "Then there'll be a lot of ticked off old people." It's just comfortable for some people, and as a rule people don't like change.

I dunno, Canada has pretty much dumped cheques - old people seem to have adapted just fine to their debit cards. And they never bounce

The store I work at sells kitchens, so once in a while, you get customers spending $6000+ to remodel.

Some customers I had tried to pay for their $8000 kitchen with a cheque. I couldn't take it. Apparently they'd been told that we accept "any form of payment." To be fair, though, I'm sure the idea of a personal cheque never crossed that employee's mind when they said that. Until then, I'd never heard of people using a personal cheque to buy something in a store. The idea just seems crazy to me.

I used checks but only if my hubby had the debit card. Around here I just handed the cashier a blank check, it gets scanned then I get the check back with my receipt. It comes straight out of my account just like my debit card does. That is the larger stores. Smaller stores and food delivery stopped taking them a long time ago. I finally used my last check so I did not even bother ordering more. I will just be getting my own debit card.

Yeah, occasionally we get this at the pizza joint. The best one was when it was right after the lady's debit card had been declined.

Not everyone has one of those. Some small banks and credit unions are even now just getting with the times of something other then a ATM card.

I only use checks to pay my rent, they'll only take either those or money orders, and money orders cost extra.

The real estate company that handles our house now takes online payments for a small convenience fee.

Mom hasn't written a check now in a couple of months at least - I'm making the payments online now.

So about the only time we use a check is either to make a payment by mail or at the local farmer's market.

Unfortunately, since I can't get the account information straightened out on the electric (online account hasn't been used in several years and cannot recall the username or password and they don't have any way to reset), I still have to pay by check.

I don't have a credit card, so if someone doesn't take debit (which would be unusual) I pay cash. I think most banks and credit unions issue check cards or debit cards now. I don't use checks much anymore. My aunt uses checks or cash for everything, though. I don't think she's ever had a credit card in her life. The woman paid cash for her house--well probably a cashier's check or something like that. She bought it free and clear. Must have saved a ton on interest and fees.

My pizza franchise stopped taking checks 8 years ago for one simple reason ------ $500,000 in bounced checks in a single year.

I posted a story about 3 years ago almost like that.

^^This. I do the same thing except for the checks. I haven't carried checks in my purse for years now. In fact, I haven't had to write one for almost 4 months. All my bills are on auto pay through my bank account and 99% of the time I use my debit card for everything else.

I remember back in the 90's when I had to buy checks once or twice a year. Now, I still have over half a box left that I purchased back in 2010. They're obsolete imo.

They may not bounce, but they do get disputed. Debit card fraud is a huge loss both for companies and the banks, depending on who eats the loss under the varying circumstances.

Alas, far too many online payment setups *cost* you several dollars over what a check does.

For example, with my light bill I hsave three choices:
Pay online and pay a $2 service fee.
Pay *in cash* at a deli a mile away and only pay a $1 service charge.
Pay by check in the mail and it only costs me a stamp and an envelope.
