So I get home vacation, deal with the 1000 emails from both business account and personal account, and pull up traffic stats for the site while I was out of town.

while looking at these, I see someone poking around the site and adding things to their cart...and compile a rather good sized order.

I watch as they make a new account, I watch as they go through the payment matrix, and even get to the confirm order page....

and then they leave the site....

Because they didn't hit the submit order button, they never finished placing the order.

so answer me this...how long do you think it will take before the customer contacts me DEMANDING to know where their order is? and what could I POSSIBLY mean that I've not received an order OR payment, they did it all online...I MUST be stealing from them...

Or do you think I'm over thinking this?

You're likely overthinking - some people simply want to find out how much the cost of a certain set of items are so that they can shop around and potentially come back later if they find you have the best price. Best to be prepared for someone that may go full retard though.

Maybe their computer crashed? Or they lost internet?

I often have to do that on sites - to find out full shipping costs. I don't know if that is a problem with your site or not - probably not.

If you want to be a little creepy one of the companies I have bought from in the past actually sends an email when you do that... "we saw you were looking at our site, heres some of our current special offers and if we can do anything to help..."
I am so SO glad I was not present for this. There would have been an unpleasant duct tape incident. - Joi

my site gives shipping estimates before you even get to the payment screen, with different options. I do know they got all the way to the payment confirmation page, where you click one more button to submit the order, meaning you've already paid.

LOL I was just on a site looking at antique restored turnspits, not even adding anything to a shopping cart and the owner popped up one of those conversation boxes to see if he could help me ... Scared the hell out of me ...

That doesn't necessarily make a difference though. The company I work for has shipping costs/ estimated delivery dates for each shipping method on the website and I still get several calls a night from somebody on the website wanting to know how much shipping is and when it would arrive. (And also people that call and are looking at an item on the website at that very moment and want to know how much it costs )

I'll second Skittles88's suggestion that their computer may have crashed. Or their power went out, or what have you.
