  • Towing: Believe it, OR NOT!

Yes, student move in week can try everyone's patience. There's a LOT of people trying to stuff a LOT of cars into a very limited space in a town laid out at a time when a lot of public transportation moved on 4 legs and was fond of carrots. So it's hectic.

But, guess what? Even with high congestion, traffic law still applies, and you CANNOT block an alleyway with your truck and tow-behind rental trailer. Especially not when the nose of your truck is blocking the sidewalk.

So, I don't see why you were all that surprised to return and find that the trailer was still there, but your truck was gone. (and it's cool man, I put a chunk of 4x4 between the wheels so it won't roll away. Oh, and gold star for you, you had the safety chains crossed, most people don't know that's the "correct" way to do it per the DOT. )

You promptly came to the garage and told us you "Couldn't believe" that the cops would have you towed for something like that because "It's move in week! They'd tow us even with all these other people around?!"

Yes, they would, in fact, if not NOW, then WHEN?

If blocking an alley doesn't matter at the peak of traffic volume for the year, then when would it matter at all?

I mean, the cops even told me they'd spent 15 minutes knocking on doors trying to find you before they gave up and found me instead.

They had a lot more patience than by any means they should have had, so, don't come a-whinging to me about how shocked you are and how unfair it was, allegedly.

I'm shocked that the cops even TRIED to look for him. Nicer than I'd be....

I've never really understood using a moving van to move into a dorm. The moving van is larger than the dorm room (and probably smells better to boot). How the heck do you fit enough junk into a dorm to warrant a moving van?

I actually ended up with this in my head instead.

About the best I can come up with is that you already are acquainted with a roommate and are doing both sets of stuff in one shot.

If I'm right about the campus, there's actually quite a lot of non-dorm type housing in the forms of apartments and such. Oh, and frats. Loads and loads of frats. Some of the newer dorms at the school are really very nice and include suites instead of just straight up cramped rooms. The OLD dorm are... oy. Evil. Concrete and tiny.

The college I went to required freshmen to live in the dorm unless you were

                  A. living with your parents (not your grandma, not your cousin, but Mom and Dad),
                  B. married,
                  C. over the age of 25, or
                  D. got special dispensation from the Dean of Students, who was a cranky old sod who hated us all and told us as much. Good luck with that.

The only time I used a trailer was when I moved 1800 miles away from my former home, and had all my worldly possessions with me. No furniture. Lots of gaming stuff.

Sounds like my first campus addy in '82. It was a cinderblock closet. OTOH I was away from the 'rents so it was awesome.

We had a couple couches, stereo and a few other things. But that would have been enough for a van...not a moving van.

I try to avoid parts of Ann Arbor during move in week.

I rented a large van to get to and from school. It was only my mother and I moving me into a decent sized room and it was easier to have enough room for everything to rest on the floor of the van than try to stack it into a car.
