  • Everyone's a Thief (Except Me)

I can't believe there are still people who are bitching about this crap. We've been prepay only (if paying with cash) since last NOVEMBER.

Guy wants to pay inside but wants to do it after he pumps with his card.

Me: You could just use your credit card outside at the pump.
SC: NO. I WANT TO DO IT IIIINNN HEEEERRRRE. I've seen how people skim your numbers off of those things!
Me: Well I'm sorry but you would have to pick an amount if you want to pay in here as a prepay. Whatever you don't use would go back on your card.
SC: This is ridiculous. This is a waste of time! I can't believe this. EVERYONE'S A THIEF HUH?! YOU GUYS DON'T TRUST ANYONE.
Me: *in awe of the sudden stupidity* Well....yeah I guess so then.

Since EVERYONE is out to get your credit card numbers at the pump then I guess you're right. Thieves must be fucking EVERYWHERE and maybe THAT'S why we don't allow you to pump before you pay anymore.

    How about that?

    Huh.

And once again.... if they'd just done that the first time, they'd have already been on their way and not lost time arguing something that can't be changed.....

Who wouldn't use Pay at the Pump (though the one's here do a pre-auth before you fill so if you want to just fill 'er up you have to overestimate, but that's no biggie for me), it's so easy and convenient. I find it hilarious that at the end, the message on the screen reads 'please drive forward to shop in-store' (or something like that) - isn't the whole purpose of Pay at the Pump is that you have to set foot in the store.

Well, you've already SAID that you don't trust us. Why the hell should we trust you?

You should have told him it would be easier to skim the card inside than out at the pump.

Yes! I'm in a similar situation. Our city recently banned plastic bags. We don't have any plastic bags at all anymore, nobody does. Stores now sell paper bags for 5¢ each, or the customer may bring in their own bags.

It seems like every customer yells at me over the stupid bag thing. I didn't create the ban! Take it up with the city!

I can honestly see both sides of the issue, but really, either bring in your own bags or bite the bullet and buy one for a nickel. Don't yell at the poor schnook behind the register, she can't pull a free plastic bag out of thin air for you! And the longer you bitch and moan, the longer it takes the transaction to finish. STFU, pay and get out!
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Let's see.... which has a greater chance for getting your credit card number skimmed: pay at the pump or hand your card to the clerk with the card skimmer under the counter? Idiot. Much better for everyone to pay at the pump. Business doesn't have to risk gas-and-dash, and customers have full control of their card at all times.
There's no such thing as a stupid question... just stupid people.

Not only that but it would be so painfully obvious if anyone had installed a skimmer on our pumps. You'd be WAY better off installing one on an ATM around here, the things are easy to recreate but our gas pump? No way. They have a very specific design and believe you me, I have to look at pretty much every one of them every day. I'd NOTICE if there was something there that shouldn't be.

It would be tough for a single cashier to pull of a skimmer under the counter unless you were on third when there's only one person but a team of cashiers...hey...stranger things have happened.

Lean forward with a sad serious expression. Say very softly 'I know it is difficult for an honest person such as yourself to understand, however, many people ARE dishonest. And those dishonest people are why corporate has put this mandatory policy in place. So when you see someone stealing, speak up. It will help prevent even stricter measure..."

DO NOT burst into laughter until s/he has driven away. Most will assume you are completely serious and think they are totally honest. Very few will see the sarcasm, and those few will probably start laughing.

Whenever I get something similar to that I just tell them "I know you're not like that, but there are people who abuse the system and so now the majority must suffer through these extra checks as penance for their crimes." Depending on how vociferously they present their case as to how much sarcasm I put into it...

Ooh, I like this! Though to be fair, I wouldn't entirely be sarcastic. Employees hate thieves far more than the customers do.

But it does seem like the one who screams the loudest has the most to hide, doesn't it?
