Anytime I hear a young guy call his friends "n*ggas" or say stupid things like "n*gga PLEASE!" I always have this urge to backhand them.

First things first, you are whiter than the snow on the ground, second of all, N*gger and N*gga are INAPPROPRIATE no matter what skin color you are. It's not ok for black people to call each other that either.

And as for the argument about "But Nigger is a slur and Nigga is a cool word", NO. Just NO. NO. NO. NO.

People who are dumb enough to call each other that, no matter what race they are, are the types of people whose IQs are the same as their shoe size.

McDonalds pays minimum wage, makes people go in for shifts as short as three hours, avoids making employees full time so they don't have to pay benefits, makes employees empty grease traps and clean crap off bathroom walls, and the cashiers deal with some of the nastiest customers known to mankind.
NO WAY was this guy going to get fired for swearing. Management likely considered themselves lucky that he showed up for his shift.
And you know what? I don't blame them. They pay minimum wage. You get what you pay for. What's the motivation to do well in that kind of job? You could get another job ANYWHERE and it would be impossible to get paid LESS.
I don't eat at McDonalds. The food is indeed cheap. And you get what you pay for.

The "N" word thing was explained to me, by a black friend of mine who uses it constantly, that if they use it to each other, it takes it away from "us" (meaning white people). If they use the word to each other then they make it theirs and take ownership of it and it takes away the connotations it has when one of "us" uses it. Meaning it's okay for them to use it, but not me.

        Or something like that.

(edit: not that I would ever WANT to use that word. I think it's a horrible word that NO ONE should use.)

I can understand the anger. I feel like "getting crazy" myself when a black person or a Mexican call ME a racist name. I really seethe with rage because I dont wanna do something that's gonna get me thrown in jail.

Even if black people saying it to one another is indeed "taking ownership" of it, it's still a vulgar term with a horrendous history.

You don't see a lot of jews referring to themselves or others as kykes. Why should this be any different?

So, as I see it, this thread needs to be less about whether the use of the "N-word" is acceptable by black people to each other, and focus on whether the employee should also have been reprimanded for using potentially offensive language while working.
For that matter, if an employee has friends come in to their workplace, and the friends start speaking to the employee using foul language, should the employee be reprimanded for joining in or for not telling the friends to tone it down?

I think the "N-word" debate is probably more suited to http://www.fratching.com/showthread.php?p=851#post851

It may be a crappy job, but IMO it's no excuse for behavior like stated in the OP, no matter what kind of workplace.

Pardon me...I should have been more clear in my original response. When I say, "I don't blame them", I mean I don't blame management for not firing the employee, because I understand how hard it must be for them to get people.

I absolutely agree with you that swearing makes for a sucky employee. Having a crappy job doesn't excuse rude behaviour, whether at work or otherwise.

I'm sure Martin Luther King Jr is rolling over in his grave at the ignorance *and* arrogance of today's younger generation.

There was a Boondocks episode where the plot of it being that MLK Jr. wasn't killed but in a coma and he wakes up and finds himself in the modern world interesting episode.

Sorry, I get slightly annoyed every time I hear the old "what's wrong with kids these days?" canard. I'm 40, and I've been hearing that since I was a kid. I think it was first quoted in some assyrian carvings.

The truth is, lots of kids are dumb. LOL!

                            2. No Offensive or Controversial Content
Offensive and controverial content on this board includes derogatory comments directed at any particular race, religion, or sex; excessive profanity; lewd or lascivious posts; plus anything that the moderators may deem offensive to a significant number of our members. If you see a rude or inappropriate post, please report it to the moderators immediately, and it will be dealt with as they see fit. However, keep in mind that due to the vast size of Customers Suck!, we can't promise that every reported post will be removed from the boards. With as many people as visit here, something is ALWAYS going to be offensive to someone else; and whether or not a reported post will be edited or deleted will ultimately be left to the discretion of the moderators. So, if another member's comments consistently rub you the wrong way, it's best to ignore them by adding them to your ignore list. Simply put; while we do our best to keep this board friendly, we cannot and will not remove every single post that ticks someone off. We could put up an extensive list of what is acceptable or not, but you have common sense so use it. If a moderator tells you that you are going over the limit of what we consider acceptable, it's a learning experience. As a good guideline, we will always consider the words 'nigger' and 'cracker' unacceptable unless you are reporting the words of a sucky customer We also do not want a debate site - there are plenty out there, so keep any proselytising or damning of politics or religion etc off this site.

You should tell them that the proper term for you is "c-word".
I find that term just as offensvie as the n-word, it is very derogatory and does NOT reference anything to do with Saltine, Ritz, or animal.

Back to the subject, while at work and representing your company, using terminology that isn't family friendly (especailly if you're a public serviant, which I think we all are here) should not be tolerated by the management or co-workers. You even need to watch what you say in the back room because it just might slip out in front of a customer.

People need to think what image they are potraying to their company, whether they like it or not. I bite my tongue quite often at work, even when customers (internal and external) deserve it.

The employee in the OP should be reprimanded for using the words she used, and if her "friends" were asked to leave, then good for the management. The *last* thing I want to hear while trying to eat is this kind of crap pouring out of people's mouths. I'll even complain to management and leave if it gets bad.

I agree. I never meant for this to become a debate of certain terms and slangs. I even erased a reply that I made on this earlier being I never meant to be in that discussion. I was simply talking about how rude many of today's teenagers are out in public, and this was the incident that was fresh in my mind. Nothing more. We need to keep this topic about courtesy and politeness.
