  • Someone's lying here, and it's not us. (long, sorry)

I work in video rental. Sunday, December 1st, I'm working the closing shift. Video stores not exactly being a boomin' business anymore, there's only more than one staff on Friday and Saturday nights. So I'm alone.

Around 8, I have a bit of a busy spurt, when a group of 5 or 6 guys comes in. Probably a couple of years younger than I (I'm 25). They're dicking around, looking at games, and being obnoxious. Come up to the counter, and one guy wants to rent WWE 2K14 for the PS3. I ask for the account number or phone number, can't find him or his parents in the system, tell him he needs various ID or for his own account. He produced the required ID. His friends were loud and immature, and I had a line forming, so I caved and did up the account to get them out of there. I explained rental rates and late charges (new games are not a cheap rental) to him, he takes the game for one night, he and his idiot friends leave.

Later, the game is overdue. We call at this point. I speak with him, he's really nice, says he's going to keep the game til next Sunday (the 8th) and pay the late fees. Cool, have fun. The 8th comes and goes, so we start calling again. He always answers or responds to voicemails, so it's all good, although that late fee is racking waaaaaay up.

Eventually, it gets to the point where the Boss informs him he should just buy out the game. He flipped out and said that he was never told how much the late fees were (blatant lie). He stops answering his cell so Boss starts calling the home phone (this is why we require 2 phone numbers!). Explains to his mother what's going on (which is pathetic as this kid is like 22. I handled my own crap when I was younger than that). His mom says, "No problem. I'll give him the money as a Christmas gift, he'll be down to buy it out."

We pull the case from the floor so he can have it, since he's buying the game. Boss let's me know it's under the counter, explains the story, and says to let her know when he showed up.

    He doesn't.

It's the 28th by this point. I was off the 24th-27th. This is important, because I'm the only 'young girl' at the store. Next female coworker is almost 40, and Boss (female) is 57. So I'm the only one who fits that description.

Dec. 31st after my shift, Boss calls me up and asks if I'm sure the guy didn't come in to buy out the game. I'm sure. Welp, she says the kid's mom claims that she gave the money to her son, and that he gave it to one of his friends to come in and pay for the game. The friend says he paid 'the young girl' and it's all dealt with. Now, obviously this is one of the friends that was with him the night he came in, as it was the only time any of them were in the store, and hence the only employee they saw was me, the 'young girl' (too kind, boys, thanks ).

I'm a little furious, til Boss says, "By the way, they're saying this happened Friday night. (the 27th)" I just burst out laughing. Boss and Male Coworker were the only ones in Friday night. Coworker A (the other female) had dayshift, and I was off! Anyway, so Boss has to keep calling the try to get payment as this never happened.

Most recent update was today. Boss spoke with the kid's mother again (kid keeps hanging up on her) and she says, "The clerk must have pocketed it." Boss tries to explain that she was the one working when they claim they came and paid for the game, and that she's FIFTY SEVEN YEARS OLD, and that she OWNS the store. So, that's the latest.

We got broken in to (3 MINUTES AFTER I'D LOCKED UP AND LEFT! but that's another story!) the following Sunday (the 8th), so I became well-versed with how to operate the security cameras and get footage while helping the police, and I keep telling Boss to tell the mom to come in so we can show her the tape from that Friday! We'll see what happens.

And with money left over, no doubt! He's 22 and lives with mom? Sounds like responsibility passed this one over...

yuuuup. seein a lot of that these days. the 'real world' is a little too scary for many of the younger adults these days. though to be honest, he probably planned this from the start.

Sounds to me like the SC was trying a not-so-clever ploy to get a "free" game...

Either that, or he's just colossally stupid.

Make it real simple call the mom, you have to till end of day to pay or the police are called for theft

Although I completely agree that the kid in the OP is a complete idiot and evidence against what I'm about to say... 22 and still living at home does not automatically equal a lack of responsibility....

... Or a fear of the real world.

He's probably hoping you'll get so sick of calling that you'll just stop. And Mom's probably sitting there wondering why you think her baby would possibly lie to you, when clearly you're just the big ol' meanie who has it out for her family!

retailsweetie, I just want to be clear that the part where I said he was pathetic was his mother having to DEAL with this, not the fact he lives at home (I was out of the house by 18, but my boyfriend's still home at 24 as he's saving to buy us a house).

ADe, yeah, I'd say he had it planned. People do it all the time (and always with games. No one bothers with movies since they can download them rather than go the theft route). However, normally at least one false phone number is given, sometimes two. We usually have to verify them while we're making the account, but I've had people change their cell numbers shortly after renting, or get their phone disconnected, etc. The fact that this guy gave me two legitimate phone numbers, including his mom's, is pretty stupid on his part.

If his mother did indeed give him the money (which sounds possible, she doesn't sound insane - just fairly stupid - when we speak to her) either he's a stolen game and $50 richer, or his friend is.

If this is how he is taught to handle responsibility it is no wonder he is in the situation here. Get by with little or no effort, mommy will find a way to fix it for you. My mom would have dragged my ass to the store and made me fill out an app and work there until it was paid off. If kids (and yes this particular 22 year old is still a kid) don't see any consequences to their behaviour it is no wonder they keep behaving badly.

I don't get any of this. Isn't a credit card taken to start an account? I could swear Blockbuster took one from me when I had an account with them years ago. (Back when there was still a Blockbuster open in Key West.) Seems it would make things far easier for the business in such matters.

I thought the same thing, I know they had mine when I had an account there many many moons ago...

We required credit cards back in the day (old accounts all have one listed), but when Blockbuster opened in my area, they didn't take credit cards for membership (this was likely just a local Blockbuster thing), and we lost a ton of new customers to them. I was a kid then and didn't work there, but Boss says the number of people who said, "I'll just go to Blockbuster!" was huge. So they changed the policy - not Boss's choice, but instructions from her brother who is the 'official' owner. Obviously, I think it should be reinstated. Blockbuster is closed now (the only reason we're still open, honestly).

There are exceptions to every rule and, speaking from experience, not all of us adults who still live at home do so b/c we're lazy.

I'm singlehandedly trying to take care of a younger sibling with developmental issues and now my Mom, who became physically disabled a few years ago. I've worked alongside my mom since I was 19 and just out of high school (no money for me to go to college, which at times still bugs me) and we've always worked together to take care of everything (and my brother.)

Not fair to paint everyone with the same brush.

^Thank you DGoddess, I was just going to say something similar. I've moved back in with my folks since I've returned from China so I could get my bearings after moving back from China, and until I find stable employment (although having a work-related injury with restrictions isn't helping any). It's not because I'm lazy, It's because there's just no way I can be on my own with no income at the moment, and a barely liveable one before that.
