  • The sad saga of Youtube and the squirrel

I'm working at a call center again...which sucks, because I have to deal with stupid people again, but at least this center is waaay better than the last one I worked at.

I work for a company I'll simply call "red checkmark"

    CC:moi
    CL: crazy guy

CC: Thank you for calling <red checkmark>, how may I assist you today?
CG: Yeah, I'm calling in about my daughter's phone, she says she's having a problem with watching youtube on it. (Note: technically, we don't troubleshoot 3rd party apps so I could have ended this call right here, but you know, customer first and all...)
CC: Ok, do you have the phone with you.
CG: No, she lives in Washington state, I'm here in Kansas.
(So why isn't SHE calling me?)
CC: Well, I doubt I'll be able to do much without the phone present, but what's going on with youtube?
CG: She told me she watching videos on it with no problem earlier today, but now when she tries to watch videos a black squirrel pops up and she can't get into the videos anymore.
    CC:
    CC: A black squirrel?
CG: Yeah...let me explain a little bit, my daughter suffers from ADD and she's also manic depressive. She's living with her boyfriend who beats her half to death most of the time.
    CC:
CG: All she told me was that some squirrel popped up when tried to get into youtube, I know she's got issues but I also know these phones can do all kinds of weird stuff.
CC: Well, that's true. Tell me--
CG: Hey, do you think her phone got hacked?
CC: Unlikely, phone hacking is not that common.
CG: It can happen! I seen on the news awhile back where some of the British Royal Family got their phones hacked!
(Note: the hacking he's referring to is related to voicemail systems, NOT the phone itself)
CC: I know what you're talking about, but I seriously doubt that's the case here.
    CG: Are you sure???
    CC: Reasonably certain, yes.
CG: Hmm...well do you think you can get her youtube working again?
CC: Possibly...but not without the phone present. Can I call her directly and go through it with her?
CG: You can try...but her boyfriend may not let her talk to you. She's at (555)111-1234.
CC: Thank you. I'll call her and see what I can do. Thank you for calling <red checkmark>. Have a great day.

So I called the daughter, power cycled the phone, re-synced it our network and she was able to access youtube again, but I never did find out where the squirrel came from.

A black square shows up on my phone. Someone was just not listening. I want the squirrel instead too.

You called the daughter? Wow, that was proactive of you. I never did anything like that, I just told the caller, "have them call in."

Don't worry though, your employer will surely break you of that. Customer service? Nonsense, it's all about the metrics!

Well, maybe it's different on the wireless side of the checkmark... and when you're working directly for the checkmark, rather than an outsourcer...

What kind of father will call in a third person tech problem and not GET HIS DAUGHTER OUT OF AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP!?

Oh, I'm working for the Checkmark but one of our metrics is repeat calls, in other words they DON'T want people calling back in repeatedly. As a result, call backs are not only approved, they are even encouraged.

Indeed. We've recently been through that ourselves. When my daughter called and said her fiance was being physically abusive, I had her back home (across the country) that evening. Money didn't matter, this is my daughter we're talking about.

Sadly, she is an adult. She needs to make the choice to leave the relationship. We can not walk another persons path for them.
