  • "But is it a /donut/ donut??"

"Is the chocolate frosted donut... is it like a donut donut??"
    "... I'm sorry... I don't understand what you mean."
"Is it a donut donut?? Is it like the Manager's Special and it's a donut all the way or???"
"No, it has a hole in it..."
"No, I mean... I'm just trying to understand if it's a donut donut or not."

SC repeated this a good 4-5 times before finally deciding to try another version of this question. Apparently she wanted to know if a frosted donut was a cake donut- such as a chocolate glazed donut where it's physically a chocolate donut. This question could have been answered by using her eyes. Her friend looked just as confused as I was and the three of us were trying not to laugh.

Wait. There are donuts that are not donut donuts? What the heck even is a donut donut? How does it differ from a normal donut? I love donuts, so I have to find out. Dang it, now I want to try a donut donut, whatever the heck that is?

Maybe she was asking if it was made with the same dough as a plain donut? And shouldn't that be spelled doughnut?

Both spellings are acceptable regional variations. Like check/cheque.

EDIT: just reread the above dialogue with an airhead affectation. It makes it even funnier.

I kinda get it. Dunkin makes a very dense chocolate cake, chocolate glazed cake donut (and thank god it's 12 miles away or I'd be in the car just thinking about them). But most of their donuts are more or an airy dough. But I'd still lost in that conversation.

Maybe she was trying in her incoherent way to inquire whether the do(ugh)nut was fried or baked?

When I was growing up, a doughnut was always Levy's. Basically a doughnut-shaped yellow cake with chocolate covering. Entenmann's would be the modern equivalent; I think they use the same recipe, but they're a little bigger, 8 to a box instead of 12. I didn't have "real" (i.e. fried) doughnuts until I was at least in high school, and then only on Chanukah.

(ETA: Levy's got taken over by Arnold's, which is now part of the same company that owns Entenmann's, so it very likely is the same recipe.)

She was asking if the donut was a 'cake' donut - which is like the old fashioned, glazed or chocolate glazed donut where the dough is different and is that flavor in the dough as well as the frosting. However, one look at the chocolate frosted donuts should have answered this question for her.

And yeah, I used to spell it 'doughnut' too- which is technically more correct I think. However, Dunkin spells it 'donuts' in their sign, so that's the spelling I've started using more frequently.

Thanks for the clarification . English is not my first language, sometime spelling of certain words feels a bit stange to me.

Don't worry, the spelling seems strange to the native speakers also.

I think I know what she was getting at.

                              This kind or this kind.

Or am I being too reasonable?

Also, what on God's earth is a timbit? How can you get the hole of a doughnut?
