What's even more worrying is that even fewer of them will have ever had the satisfaction of slamming down a phone into the receiver (angrily jabbing a screen doesn't come anywhere close...)
The closest you can get to that with a cell phone is if you have a flip phone, and flip it shut. But there are fewer of those about these days, it seems.

Now, it ONLY sees the external screen; the laptop screen doesn't turn on even if the external is unplugged. (Not even for bootup/bios that I've noticed). And if I close the lid it still goes to sleep even thoug h Itold it not to. *sigh* Oh well, 11 is working enough for me so I'm not touching a thing.
I ran into this with my Dell 1210 netbook, and newer HP laptop. Adding "acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor" to the startup options (press 'e' during GRUB loading/OS selection screen) resolved the issue of not seeing the display.

You knew you were good and mad when you could make the bell go off a little.
And extremely mad when *the they* smashed your fingers between the handset and the phone...

Does it scare anyone else that a huge number of people who grew up with cell phones probably have no idea what that little (handset-shaped) image on that button is meant to represent?
It doesn't scare me as much as it disappoints me. Hell, One kid the other day asked me "What the heck is dial-up?" ... I think I died a little inside.

I'll take the OP crazy lady's window 8 computer and she can keep the ones I use on a daily basis. Especially since I've got a Windows 3.1 computer interfaced with my laser welder (the version that runs on windows 7 is available and man is it nice). Nothing like cutting edge products being created by a machine that's old enough to drink...

The rest of the company just transitioned to windows 7 outside of a few oddballs connected to test gear (too "expensive" to upgrade those ones). Being the keeper of the 3.1 computer, I of course have one of the oddballs running win 98 with zero hope of ever having either ever being upgraded.

If you really want to feel old, look up Kids React Rotary Phone on Youtube. No, no they don't know what that is supposed to represent. And if they were shoved into the past, they wouldn't have any idea how to make a phone call!
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

Holy shit! Windows 3.1!! We had that on our second computer an AST Advantage! Adventure! 6066D. This was the thing http://cuttingthechai.files.wordpres.../1996pc_06.jpg It had windows 3.1 but it also had "AST Advantage!" desktop, which would load instead of program manager. Much more user friendly than program manager. That screen it's showing is the "Main" part which seared no purpose other than to show you the AST logo

                I miss that computer.

I think the scarey thing is that put them in the past and not being able to make phone calls would be the least of their worries.

Personally I think we are a little too over-reliant on technology. It was hammered home to us at work not so long back. There was a pub being built around the corner. I don't know the fine details of what happend, but a national grid worker, who came in afterwards to look at a new PC told us that basically the builders had put a JCB through a 250 000 volt cable and knocked out the power to the entire town.

                Thankfully the driver was okay.

However, our generators didn't start. There was no fuel in them! This meant all we had was the little battery powered emergancy lights in the ceiling. Not enough light to trade by, for a start. Not to mention that it seems none of the people who have been there less than 5 years can do anything without the POS system. Most of the old timers can get by with manual receipts but not these guys.

We were just kind of standing there. "Can we do some training?" Nope. That's all on the computer. "Can we make a cup of tea? I know the Kettle is electric but we have a gas stove" We do but we have no matches and the spark on the stove is electric.

There's a burger van outside. He runs on propane gas and his own diesel generator. I went outside to get a cup of tea. When I asked him "How much" he leaned in close and said "To staff; 50p" to which I asked "Mitch...How much are you charging the public?"

                "£1.60" I was stunned. But I can't say I blame him.

Just like the call I got about a customer's 'cup holder' that broke...only to have to explain that they broke the computer's CD/DVD drive and it was not a warranty repair as it was customer damage. Or the one that used it as a hanger for her purse.
Or, in the days before EFI (and automatic chokes before that), the customer who complained about her car having poor performance and guzzling gas. Mechanic couldn't reproduce the problem. Finally he "rode shotgun" on a drive with the customer. She got in the car, pulled out the choke, and hung her purse on it.

Sounds like the modem I had with the Commodore 64. And I didn't even ask for the damn thing . . I asked for a mouse so I wouldn't have to keep using the old Atari joystick and Mom went and bought a modem.

From then on, I buy my own computer equipment.

I was talking to a customer the other day. Their daughter made a comment about how their 10Mb FiberOP broadband was slow. I laughed at her and said You're too young to remember dial-up. Her dad immediately chuckled and started imitating a dial-up modem noise XD then her mum said "Yeah. THAT was slow"

I loved my c64. Especially with the FastLoad cartridge, allowing me to bring up games from a 5.25 inch SS/SD floppy in a mere 30 seconds or so. Well, the title screen, anyway. Like the D&D Gold Box games...and especially M.U.L.E. That game taught me more about economics than any class I've ever taken >_>
