so i almost forgot about this one, but the 'july may kill me thread" reminded me
4th of July the entire campground was booked. every single space, every single cabin, every single tent site. even that weird tiny overflow site that doesn't have it's own hookups and shares with the site next to it? yup ,that one was booked too. 240ish spaces all told. SO... at 9:50... 10 minutes to closing time this young dude comes in and is like "do you have any space for a tent?" i tell him no we're completely booked, full to to gills etc. "Nothing at all?" nope. "What about over there." no sorry, every single space is rented... we go back and forth a little bit. at least he's not being outright sucky... just a little frustrating and wtf. srsly dude its late, i want to close, i've been dealing with screaming kids pawing over everything in my store for the last 8 hours on a holiday weekend. it's go home time. we have no room at the inn. go away. and then he asks the capper "well what if i camp in the woods on the other side of that fence (our property line)"
i don't want to lie. i says: well, that's technically off our property, so the police, or possibly the property owner, or both would come along at some point and tell you to go. dude sounds disappointed and is like "oh, ok" and finally leaves and i think that's the end of it. but if it were, i wouldn't be telling this story, now, would i?
i go in to work the next day and hear an interesting story from the guy who worked security the night before. apparently, the dude from the night before had crept back at 2am and set up his tent just outside the property line back in the woods, and his intention was to just catch a few hours of shut eye and take off at 6am and no one would be the wiser. unfortunately for him, our security was out patrolling till 3am, caught him, and called the owner. even though the guy was technically off the property, the security guy and the owner were both like "you can't just have your tent randomly out there in the woods like that" and, out of the kindness of the owner's heart, instead of throwing him out or calling the police they moved his tent to the driveway of the owner's on-site house. not technically a space that we could rent, but flat, and big enough for the tent and their car, and just outside the boss' window so he could keep an eye on em if he had to, altho true to his original intention, he was gone of his own volition at 6am
they were wondering how this dude got the impression it was ok to randomly pitch a tent wherever he felt like, and from their description i put 2 and 2 together and realized it was probably the same dude from the night before, and we figured he probably took my statement that the police would tell him to shove off and interpreted it as "no, you're not supposed to be here, but you'd have a few hours before anyone found you if yer lucky"
