Well, I thought it was a Mercedes because of the style of headlights. That website you gave is next to useless if you don't know the make. However, http://www.cardatachecks.co.uk/ tells me it's a Dodge (I didn't even realize we had Dodge in the UK by 1986. We barely seem them around even now. )

However, after a bit of digging around to get the brand name of it, I managed to find out that it was first registered on the 20th of January 1987 and it tax expired in January of 2007 so that dilapidated old wreck must have been taken off the road some time around then. Which would be about right for the time when all of us were standing in Supermart debating what to do about the fact a Jalopy travel bus had exploded. We could see the state of the vehicles that came onto the forecourt. When you can hear an engine having to struggle to keep itself ticking over on idle, when an automatic transmission is kangaroo-hopping as it pulls out, When you see the speedometer needle bouncing up and down through a 20MPH range even though the bus is maintaining a constant speed (many of us rode the bus to work and the main operator for that route at the time was Jalopy travel) then it's clear there's serious mechanical faults with the vehicles. We didn't want a fire on our forecourt.

I have to say that's an unfortunate name for anything that involves moving vehicles, even if it was named after the owner.

Hah. It certainly is! You know, when they first started operating, the vehicles were in a state even back then. According to what I can find, they first rattled out of a garage back in 1994. Being only 9 years old at the time I GENUINELY thought "Oh, they must be called Jalopy Travel because that's the kind of vehicle they are driving around in" I actually remember sitting on a "Network" bus (not their name at the time but it's their name now) looking at a Jalopy Travel bus and thinking that.
