  • Made a little kid cry...

Her own mother did, not me, technically.

So where I work it's a gaming law that children can not be up in line with you, standing around or even near the cage area. You can't stash them behind a pillar, two feet away from you behind the line or anywhere else you think "stashing" the little ones are appropriate. They can casually stroll by slowly and get around this rule sometimes.

It's not my choice I can get fired if I help someone with a minor, get fined and so can the Casino. I didn't make the rules. So stop acting like I did and being an ass to me. I am just a sheep following strict rules.

I notice a mother in line with her kid. The kid was super adorable probably like six or seven.

Me: Unfortunately ma'am I can't assist you with a child present.

SC: (Instant suck mode) Well what am I supposed to do with her then??

Me: uh, do you have anybody else with you?

She gave me the stink eye and told her kid to stand behind the line.

Me: Again, she can't be there. This whole area is a gaming area and kids can't be here. They can be by the restrooms or the restaurants...

SC: Go stand over there then!

    She barks at her kid.

Kid: Mommy... I can't I'm not supposed to be by the machines!

The mom grabs the kid and takes off and I watch her trying to leave her kid in various spots only to have the kid wail that she didn't want to leave her side. It was heart breaking. But I can't do anything. She even tells the kid to walk back and forth but it upsets the poor kid.

I will not loose my job because of this. There has to be a family member or a friend somewhere. How else did she get the chips or whatever she had?

A few mins later guess who is in my window and her little girl is like a few feet away.

SC: I want your boss! This is ridiculous!!

    Me: okay.

I run to the back to grab my boss. She comes out but we can't find the lady anywhere. Security was with her kid and the poor kid was bawling. Cuz she left her alone in a spot where you shouldn't and her kid was scared.

I honestly felt bad but again not bad enough to get fired. I'm on tape and I need this job.

Finally she leaves with security. Comes back up later without her kid and cashes out with my co worker. I hate when they cuss at me like I am making it personal. It's not my choice. But this is an adult place to be.

I didn't know about that rule, but why would you want to take your child to a casino anyway?

Yeah, I always figured it was like alcohol--as long as the kid's under parant/guardian supervision.

The rule probably came into being cuz of sucky parents who treated the reception area of the casino like a free babysitter.

I took #1 Son into a casino once. They had a bunch of restaurants there and my dad is addicted the hot brown one of them serves. We didn't go anywhere near the cage or the gaming floor, of course. I did see some little kids sitting the corridor doing their homework, I hope they were the children of an employee and not one of the patrons.

I think the rule about kids by the machines or near the cage is because bringing your kid to to a casino to just stand around and suck down free soda while you play slots can very easily evolve into your kid plunking coins (or using your casino card) to play a few games "just to shut them up and/or keep them busy", and since kids playing even a single game even once is illegal, best not to set them on that slippery slope.

Sadly, I wouldn't bet on it.

I know when I was a wee little Jedi, Mama Jedi would take me to the buffet at a nearby casino because it was cheap. I don't think getting into the buffet cheap is the case anymore if the buffet in Vegas we went to is any indication, but other than that, I have no idea why you'd bring a kid to a casino.

Casino food is no longer cheap. I blame the player cards for that. The casinos can now track who the high rollers are, and make everyone else pay.

When I was maybe 10 or 11 I went with my parents to Reno. Long story, but my step-dad was part owner of a business at that time. Anyway, we had lost all track of time playing games at Circus Circus and it was like 2 AM. We were walking through some casino and I can't remember why, but my parents stopped for something. I was so tired and sat down at a slot machine. Poof! An employee popped in like .05 second to (very nicely) tell me I couldn't sit there, not even if my back was to the machine. He gave me a key chain. I suppose my point is, casinos are not messing around regarding minors.

Fair enough, it's nice to know SOME places can have actual, non-bendable rules.

There are casinos in Vegas that were for a while trying to promote themselves as family friendly. Show the pool and the roller coaster or whatever. I don't know how many try to market that way anymore. When I was there years ago, I saw a kid sitting on the edge of the carpet leaning on the post and security came and made the mom and kid move. I have no idea why you actually want to take your kid on vacation just to ditch them while you gamble. Save the plane and hotel money for more gambling. However, if you're on the boardwalk in AC, casinos are tempting when hauling kids. They have air conditioning and bathrooms.

It's called selfishness. Mom and/or dad want(s) to gamble but there's no one else to watch the kids and paying a babysitter would take away from the gaming money.

I remember one local case where two idiots left their six-year-old daughter in charge of her two- and four-year-old siblings in their hotel room, and went off to the casino. The six-year-old went looking for help because she couldn't get the two younger kids to go to bed, security was called, and darling mummy's comment was, "I know it seems weird to leave a six-year-old watching the other kids, but she's really mature for her age."

That somehow wouldn't surprise me...like that classics dealing with parents who mistake stores for daycare

Wasn't there a story here somewhere about parents who brought their kids and a babysitter to a casino? IIRC the babysitter went AWOL and got caught making out with some random guy, the parents called the babysitter's parents to come and get her...

Nothing wrong with taking a kid to the casino buffet, you just gotta keep him with you and away from the restricted areas. Most of the casinos back home (NOLA) solve this by either having all foodservice areas up front, and easily accessible *before* you get to the front door of the gambling area, or in a separate wing entirely.

It seems to me that a child care area would be a good thing to offer. But then again, SCs wouldn't want to actually pay somebody to watch their kids.
