  • If you want me to be your concierge...tip me like one.

    Hi everyone.

Still loving my job at the hotel. I know many people on here don't like the brand I work for, but I think a lot of it comes down to management, and my manager is fantastic. Also, most of my guests are nice. I must not attract mean people because they've been few and far between in my entire job history (or maybe Colorado is just a friendly state, or the thin air makes us goofy happy or something...I dunno).

There is one thing I find annoying though: people who expect me to be their concierge (a service my hotel, the famous Elongated Hexagon Inn...does not offer) but don't tip me the way they would, say, a bellman.

One guy, who is nice enough otherwise, wants me to do all his photocopies and scans for him (use the business center you dip). There's another who would rather my book him a shuttle via a third party (giving me his complete credit card info) than spend 5 minutes and do it himself. Neither one has tipped me.

I have, however, had 20s slipped to me by people for whom I did nothing special. I'd call a cab for anyone, or move any guest to a different room if their shower didn't work.

Being Colorado, I'd think it was something else in the air...

LOL! It's true that use of certain, erm, recreational substances does tend to mellow people out, but I've lived here my whole life and the legalization laws are less than two years old (they didn't go into effect until well after the voters approved them). Our population was friendly well before legalization.

Also, please take any comments about whether said substance should or should not be legal to Fratching. This thread is for griping about non-tipping guests.

We don't have a concierge either. I've booked restaurant reservations, whale watching tours, towncar services, etc. for guests who didn't want to do it themselves and I never get tipped sh*t for it. I see very few tips even for helping with luggage.

There is one regular though who tips me $20 to park his fancy car and he gave me another $10 to take some beers up to his room and put them in the fridge for him. Whenever he comes in he seeks me out to park his car specifically

It's always nice to get those regulars who get it into their head that YOU are the one who does it perfectly EVERY TIME. Which is true, but it's nice that they think ONLY YOU can.

When they pay me $20 a pop, I don't mind if it's ONLY ME that can do it.

We do get a few demanding people here. Today was one of the worst days I've had as far as that (though yesterday I did answer 5 calls demanding an early check-in before 7:15am...and my shift starts at 7).

I had one who was sure she'd booked a suite because "$125 for a standard room is CRAZY" (ummm....suite rate is $225 lady), who "had pictures of the suite" that she "gave to her sister" (ok...that convinces me how?) and "booked for 5 people" (so...what...exactly? That means you have 5 people in a room, not that you get an upgrade). She booked through Hotwire too. Good for you lady. That means you automatically get sent to the bottom of the priority list. You want special treatment? Sign up for Hellton (Dis)Honors and my manager will let me upgrade you.

I had another person with a strong Jersey accent who wanted a mountain view but got all upset that the BMW dealership next door to us (and which her room overlooks) was doing construction. "I'm not going to stare at that garbage dump all day". Ok, whatever, even my manager rolled his eyes at that and said (to me, not to her) "why don't you look UP at the mountains and not DOWN?". And finally, a "send the housekeeper up here to wipe my tub immediately, there's a black hair in it!" It's probably FROM the housekeeper dingbat, they all have dark hair. I LIVE in hotels right now because we got kicked out of our apartment. I carry wipes with me. If there's a hair, I...and I know this is astonishing...WIPE IT OFF MYSELF!

To be fair I can see complaining if the tub was filthy, but our housekeeping team does an AMAZING job. One hair isn't going to kill you, your highness. Ok, rant over. I still like my job and these kinds of things don't really bother me as much as my ranting makes it sound, it's just comforting to complain (cookies for reference).

I got a lot of complaints about hairs when I worked at the Inn. And a LOT from people who booked thru third party websites. Gimme dis, gimme dat, what do u MEAN I can't get a receipt?!?!?! Blah blah. They would trash up their rooms too. It got so bad that the sales manager there finally canceled our dealings with Expedia. Wish ours would too here. But she'd rather stick her head in a fireplace. :\

Hair Lady visited the desk again today. She thanked me for being so nice to her and gave me a bottle of her massage oil (she apparently owns a brand and sells the stuff). It's called Pain Eraser and she says it really helps people who stand all day (like I do). Haven't tried it yet, but now I'm kind of ashamed of being annoyed with her. Also Copy Guy showed up. He's actually really nice and I've now decided to call him my favorite PITA.
