And rocks and dirt aren't edible.
Some SCs would disagree - they're rock-chewingly stupid.

Those of us who aren't vegetarians usually ask for the same courtesy as far as our food choices that vegetarians do. We carnivores don't want to be "preached to" any more than vegetarians/vegans do.

I can only guess that she figured you were one of those "holier than thou" or "I'm better than you" vegetarians.

Me? I'm usually fine with vegetarians (see: "holier than thou" above). In fact, several months back I made a risotto for a work function. Usually I use chicken stock in it, but I knew a few of my co-workers were vegetarians, so I used a vegetable stock instead.
Some years back, there was a potluck at the post-secondary institution I was attending. When it was being organized, I asked if anyone had any dietary restrictions, and was shouted down. I made my favourite chili, which can be made vegetarian with a couple simple changes.

Got to the potluck, and it turned out that around half the people in attendance (including those who were loudest in shouting me down) were vegetarians, and there were NO vegetarian main dishes. Enjoy going hungry.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

I even asked the lady on my team who was a vegetarian if butter was OK. Some vegetarians don't eat butter/dairy. She said it was OK.

And I couldn't really tell much of a difference with the risotto, anyway.

Personally, I would rather that the servers just know what it is in each dish and be able to suggest similar alternatives if something is not available. As for whether or not they tried it, I really don't care; personal tastes very too much for that to be any help. People eat squid (and things with squid ink in them!!), raw fish, avocados, clams and wild game such as bear meat, just to name a few things that would make me gag, but other people love these things. So the server's favorite thing on the menu could easily be something I wouldn't touch with the proverbial 10 ft pole.

Sometimes it seems to me that talking food choices is even more risky than talking religion. I once had someone actually apologize to me about drinking water on her break when she saw me drinking an iced coffee.

Is this a new thing, or am I just so oblivious that I haven't really noticed? I wasn't judging what she was drinking and I certainly didn't think that she was judging me.

I've noticed. Here's one. I drink whole milk. I don't go around talking about it, generally, but I have gotten some weird unsolicited comments. I really never mention what someone is eating or buying, unless it's in a positive way. "Ooh, those blueberries look good!" Let's just leave everyone's food choices alone. Didn't we just have a thread on here about CWs making comments about food? Seriously it's annoying.

As to the OP, I wouldn't ask other people's opinion about food since it's so unlikely I have the same taste as they do.

I quoted your entire post because it's all spot on. The bolded part is the best.

Everyone likes different things. This can be said about movies, books, animals and plants along with food. That's what is wonderful about people, we are all different.

I do agree with you about asking other people's opinions about food. If it's a server, its going to be great, no matter what it is. Personally, I like spicy and I love horseradish. Many of my friends hate spicy and loath horseradish.

BTW, I happen to love whole milk. The only reason I don't drink it at home is because my cats also love it and most of them puke when I give it to them. They don't like 2% milk, so that's what I drink.

This is something I rarely share because some people hate cats and some people would be appalled at the idea that I am allowing my pets to dictate what I do in my own home.

My mom is a chef at a local high-level academic residential program. Occasionally they will have events with outside visitors, and if asked to cook she always asks the coordinator if there are any dietary restrictions or concerns. Many times that the answer is 'no', there is always one or two that then choose to raise a stink upon seeing the food (usually when there are vegetarian/vegan sides, but no appropriate main dish).

The chef needs to KNOW, people. The regular crowd of guys will happily eat anything, and if there are any considerations/likes/dislikes those are made known at the beginning of the semester.

I have a friend who is allergic to red meat. Try explaining that to people and it's the deer in the head lights. Then they assume she's vegan/vegetarian or don't believe her at all. She's fine with fish, and I think, chicken, and turkey.
When I was at my sickest, my guts rebelled at all seafood and all poultry - so basically, I was the inverse of that friend.

Trust me, I understand her pain with trying to explain it to people.

                          1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
                          2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                          3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                          4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Yes, because beef is still demonized, even though we now know saturated fat doesn't cause heart disease. But oh, red meat... ... ...
