Titan works at Roger's grocery(not the real name)

Yesterday, day before Thanksgiving, there's people throwing fits about the grocery store being out of shit to make their Thanksgiving dinner.

Shit like Turkeys, where there's a shortage that has been all over the news so you you KNOW to get it a week ahead of time.

No, no it can't be SC's fault for waiting until last minute. It's the store's fault for being out!

Or only having frozen turkeys left.

"But I don't have time to thaw it!" That's our problem how?

How do these people manage to function?

What's so awesome about turkey anyway? A couple years ago, for Canadian thanksgiving, I went balls to the wall and bought a huge beef tenderloin and made beef wellington.

      It was DELICIOUS.

That's my feeling as well. A lot of trouble to make and there's not much meat left when you're done. I'd rather do a ham or roast beef where there's something remaining at the end for leftovers...

Turkey was primarily a northern (as in northern United States) tradition (wild turkeys are native to more northerly areas) until one of the world wars (I forget which one) when West Point fed the troops passing through a turkey dinner, introducing a lot of non-yankees to it. They liked it and took it home. It's basically just a tradition, but no law says you have to make turkey.

I think it's possible (but generally not recommended) that you can thaw a turkey in a shorter timeframe...

But you basically have to do it in the bathtub...I think Alton Brown had an episode on that once...

As far as being a lot of trouble, if you're talking about cleaning the guts and stuff from the inside, sure. But as far as cooking, it's straightforward:

500ºF for half an hour, then 350º until the breast meat reaches 160ºF. Takes about 3 hours.

As was said, it's just the tradition. I care more about being with family and friends, but for some people, it's all about the meal being what they've had for the past x number of years.

The cold water thawing isn't any worse than thawing in the fridge. It keeps the turkey below 40 F, which is where nasties can start to grow. We did ours that way.

There's a turkey shortage? There was plenty in the coolers on Sunday.

Same here, even on Thursday. But I understand the Avian Flu has forced the destruction of many birds, and the price of eggs has skyrocketed...

I think it was a shortage of fresh turkeys, not the frozen. And yeah, couldn't have told it by my store's meat department! Chock full o' birds!

So did I. Had leftovers for the next day but by Saturday, all gone.

I also took the easy way out and pre-purchased mine at Bojangles' this year. Cajun seasoned fried turkey is the way to go.
