  • Pizza Chronicles: Scammer

Working in the pizza industry I've seen many scammers through out my years, people cheating the customer complaint system to receive free products while hard working customers bust their asses to put food on the table and barely have enough to pay for takeout. I catch scammers almost bi-monthly and are handles appropriately. Yesterday I took action against one and he was one of the worst.

    Tuesday, December 1st.

I arrive to work at 5:00 pm to see a complaint slip that says "S/C burned pizza free large pizza credit". When I ask my coworker wheres the returned pizza, she said "oh I just let him keep it, it was really burned and black". I asked how much of the pizza was left? She stated, "There was about three slices left". A RED FLAG immediately went up in my head, who eats a black pizza to about three slices and then decides to complain? If your pizza is black anyone would return it immediately return it or call to complain.

Our ovens are also timed to prevent burned pizzas as well so I check the security cameras of when the pizza was made on Monday. Our cameras are very good and you can see individual toppings on those things. As I assumed, the pizza came out of the oven in perfect condition and was promptly cut and put into a box. I then put a note in the system so when the customer comes in to get their free pizza i am to be notified and I will handle the customer.

    Thursday, December 3rd.

I come into work right at open and assist in the kitchen, my co worker calls me into the lobby to tell me the customer has called to order the free pizza. I said okay I will make it personally, I am going to catch this guy red handed and not call him out on it right away. I am going to make this good. I cook the pizza perfectly and take a picture of it with my phone before I box it. S/C comes in to pickup their pizza and I said simply here you go, sorry for the inconvenience with the last pizza. It was a young guy in his early 20's. He said "I work hard for my money, if you guys actually knew how to make a pizza this wouldn't happen". (At this point I am biting my lip trying my best not to loose my shit) I said again have a good day sir, and he left.

    Friday, December 4th

4:30, my co-worker calls me into the lobby to tell me a customer called to complain about a burned pizza and that he's returning it. I look at the caller ID and ITS THE SCAMMER. I am excited at this point.

S/C arrives at 5:11 p.m. I greet the S/C, and the S/C just throws the pizza at the counter and it slides off and falls on the floor at my feet. I open the counter gate and tell the customer to pick it up and give it to me nicely or he will be escorted by me outside. The customer picks it up and opens it, yelling "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME, ANOTHER BURNED PIZZA. YOU REALLY NOT LIKE YOUR JOB BUD"? I inspect the pizza, the crust is black and the toppings are black. I then notice cheese has dripped between the slices and has burned, which indicates it has been COOKED IN HIS OVEN AND BURNED!

I look at the S/C and I walk in front of the counter right up to his face and I tell him "Do you think I am a fucking idiot"? He started getting nervous and said "YOU BURNED MY PIZZA I WANT A REFUND". While clearing his throat. I then pull out my phone and show him his perfectly cooked pizza, and I said this is your pizza, I made it myself. I said now you can leave. S/C refused unless he got his refund.

I called the owner, notified him of the situation. Owner replied "Get him out of the store now". I then go back to the s/c and tell him hes going to leave or we are going to make him. The S/C proceeds to tell me to go fuck myself. So I had my co-worker call the police, and tell them we have someone detained. At that point my other co-worker runs and tackles the S/C and grabs his legs and I grab his torso and begin to move him out the door while he screams and tries to escape. Might I add, he was making squeaking noises that sounded almost like a cross between a pig and a donkey, we get this kid out of the store and on to the sidewalk and we both sit on him till the police arrive and arrest him. Hes been charged with trespassing, unfortunately in order for us to get our money back from him scamming us is if we take him to court. Not worth it.
He is also barred from any of our locations.

I was with you until the SC was tackled; that seems a little extreme. Couldn't you have just barred him, put his picture and details on the 'No Pizza' wall for the employees to note? Even if he left before the police arrived you would have his deliver details and picture on video for the police to go talk to him/ban him.
Pain and suffering are inevitable...misery is optional.

Can you warn any of your competitors about this douchecanoe?

I took it more as they grabbed him quickly so he couldn't get away. I'm glad he got arrested, there are too many assholes like him that get away with far too much.

Nah, let them learn the hard way. If he hasn't been through them already.

Agreed, tacking him wasn't the best idea - let the cops do that (ensures more hilarity anyway).

And agreed, he needs to be permnabanned and never taste pizza goodness again!

Tackling a guy to the ground for scamming some free pizza does seem kind of unwarranted. I mean, call the cops? Sure, but let them take care of the guy. It's not like you didn't know his address if he bailed.

While I wouldn't have tackled the jerk, I can certainly understand the motivation. The SC lied and yelled and probably acted threatening. Scammers always get defensive when called out on their lies and after one has listened to one too many lies...well, despite what people think...retail folks are people too.
